  • Anatomy of the Saab 9-3 from Flash Engineering and TTA race information

The TTA website published a story about the TTA Saab 9-3 earlier today. There is another picture gallery of a race car that was delivered to Flash Engineering a few months ago.

I contacted Flash Engineering for some more information about this car and quickly received a response from Johan Meissner, the Press Manager for the company based in Karlstad, Sweden:

The base for the car is the same as you saw in the picture special from February, correct. The technical specification of the TTA Saab is as follows:

    Eight races will be held:

    12/05 – Karlskoga
    02/06 – Anderstorp
    16/06 – Gothenburg
    07/07 – Falkenberg
    18/08 – Karlskoga
    01/09 – Anderstorp
    15/09 – Tierp Arena
    29/09 – Gothenburg

There will be one race per race weekend of 40 minutes and they are currently evaluating the introduction of pitstops.

No penalty weights or dispensation, that is one of the main reasons behind the formation of the championship. TTA was formed by the four biggest racing teams in Sweden - Flash Engineering, Volvo Polestar Racing, BMW Dealer Team WestCoast Racing and Brovallen Design.

The main thing with the racing in the TTA - Racing Elite League is for everyone to race on the same conditions. It is not about the team with the biggest development budget for new parts, it is about the best driver and the best team.

And technical specification of the car:

    Length: 4700 mm
    Width: 1970 mm
    Height: 1205 mm
    Wheelbase: 2750 mm
Track width: 1660 mm front/1630 mm rear
Suspension: Double wishbone, three-way dampers, etc.
    Body: Carbon fibre
    Engine: V6 with hybrid system
    Drive: RWD
    Power: 420 BHP
Gearbox: 6-speed sequential with paddles on steering wheel
Hybrid system: Kinetic Energy Recovery System (KERS)
Rear wing: 1600 mm width/300 mm depth
Brakes: Front: 4-piston calipers, 370 mm ventilated discs
Rear: 4-piston calipers, 360 mm ventilated discs
Rims: 18″ with centre wheel nut
    Tyres: Front: 260/660-18 Rear: 280/660-18

I hope that you guys will cheer Flash Engineering on with Saab on the race tracks in 2012!

Information from the TTA Group about the pictures:

The first TTA cars have been delivered to Brovallen Design, Flash Engineering, Volvo Polestar Racing and BMW Dealer Team WestCoast Racing today.

“We have written Swedish motorsport history today. The car are at last here, a product of hard work from everyone involved in the TTA and it is something we can be really proud over,” said Jan “Flash” Nilsson, TTA representative.

The four teams has got one car each while the fifth car of the first delivery is in France for further tests while the winter keeps an ice cold grip of Sweden.

“A thorough work now starts for all of the teams ahead of the first race at Karlskoga on the 12th of May. We are at the same time continuing our test work in France regarding different technical and aerodynamical areas,” said Greger Landén, representative of the TTA Technical Group.

Many thanks to Johan Meissner for the information!

I don't know much about race car development but it appears there aren't many parts that are also used in the regular cars. Besides the exterior styling, is there anything else from the regular 9-3?

The chassis of the TTA-cars are specially made for the series and the same for all cars. Meaning the only difference between the cars (SAAB 9-3, Volvo s60, Citroen C5(?) ) is the body.
The v6 engine for example is based on a NISMO-engine.

Thanks for the explanation linken. So it basically is a marketing tool to get the Saab name on the track and in the media. Which is kind of odd because I don't see what Saab Parts can gain from this. There aren't any more Saabs being made so it is not about increasing sales.

I think the decision from the two teams to use SAAB body shells is an homage to the brand.

"Jag är mycket stolt över att ha varit en del av SAAB. Jag tycker att initiativet av Flash Engineering att hedra Saab med en tävlingsbil är fantastiskt och man förstår vad mycket känslor det finns runt Saab hos hela svenska folket, säger Jan-Åke Jonsson, vd för Saab Automobile AB från 2005 till 2011."

I think the initiative of Flash Engineering to honor Saab with a race car is fantastic and you understand what a lot of emotions there are about Saab of the entire Swedish population, said Jan-Ake Jonsson, managing director of Saab Automobile AB from 2005 to 2011." copied from flash engineerings webpage

Is there excessive consumption of engine oil?

Assuming your recent oil consumption issue is related to a newly defective PCV system .(and not some of the other more serious causes mentioned earlier)
