The North American International Auto Show (formerly the Detroit Auto Show until 1989) is opening today with Saab participating near the show. In recent years, several automakers have skipped the show, presumably as a cost cutting measure, including Nissan, Porsche, Suzuki, and Saab. Porsche returns this year after four years. Nissan returns next year after a three year absence.
Saab is meeting with show officials today to discuss return to the show. However, Saab is returning to Detroit even this year, albeit not in the exhibition hall. Saab has set up an outdoor exhibition on the patio of the former Hotel Pontchartrain, across the street from the convention center.

Erik Liljas loves to play with snow. And last year he wanted to deliver a message of hope by carving in snow a Saab 92. An internet buzz has been emerging around this sculpture and this year Erik wanted to replay the same idea with a Saab 900 thanks to the help of his children. Because he loves to see people passing by, watching his chef d'oeuvre from the street. But also because in Erik's family we all do love Saab since years.
Erik knows how to do it and his tools are a picture , a lot of snow and water. It has taken 50 hours to do it clean. And the result survived last year from Christmas until the end of March. Before 1983, associating a Scandinavian car company with soft-top motoring was a little bit like having a smooth-running railway network in the UK - a rather unusual state of affairs. Spyker Cars NV, the owner of Saab Automobile, plans to tell shareholders in May whether it intends to list the company on the Swedish stock exchange, Chief Executive Officer Victor Muller said. “I think the annual shareholders meeting is an ideal forum to look at what we’re thinking in terms of the dual listing,” Muller said in a telephone interview today. Muller last September told reporters that Spyker may add a listing in Stockholm to its Amsterdam Euronext trading by April 2011. The annual general meeting, where the issue now will be discussed, will be held May 19, he said.
The Dutch super-car maker bought Saab from General Motors Co. for $400 million in cash and preferred shares last February, as Saab was on the brink of shutting down. The Trollhättan-based manufacturer aims to sell 120,000 cars and become profitable by 2012. Muller, who is Saab’s chairman, reiterated that if Spyker enters the Stockholm exchange, it would also keep its Amsterdam listing for at least a period of time. ...
