Challenge - you need a new job - which company would you like to work for (and why)?

I am currently looking for a new job.

I've run across a couple that look to be really good to their employees.
Just wondering what experience you have had.

If you needed a new job, what company (or person) would you like to work for?

And if you know of any positions available ...

I'm still searching for that "holy grail" of IT jobs - running the entire infrastructure for a small firm (law, CPA, architectural, etc)

I have worked for small and medium sized companies. Both have their advantages. The previous company had about a 1000 people and 20+ offices. I work in IT and our department had about 25 people. I was database developer/server admin. I specialized in a certain area but still was part of a larger team. I later moved on in the same company to manage all IT in one of our offices in California. More general and lower level work (I never really liked Desktop Support) but still part of a larger team.

I currently am a 1-man team managing all IT for a manufacturing company with about 80 people. There is a lot of freedom but have to deal with many different systems. Desktop support, server and network admin, postmaster general for the email server, AS/400 ERP, CRM systems, remote user support, shipping workstations etc etc. You basically have to know everything about everything. But it is rewarding and challenging being in control of all IT in a single business.

Not exactly what you were asking for but it's to show the difference working for small, medium and large companies. All have their pros and cons.

I am a bit burned out in the IT business. Never really went to school for this and kind of rolled into it. I very much would like to do something in the Automotive business which my education was about. It's just pretty tough with the economy in the last few years to make a big career change. Especially in this area, you're lucky to even have a job. And one that pays more than $10 an hour.

I would love to work for Saab. And I wouldn't even really care in what kind of position. It would be cool to assemble Saabs in the Trollhattan factory, work in their IT department or even work at a dealer or SCNA. I never really had that before because you normally establish what kind of work you want to do and then figure out the company you want to work for. Or the company doesn't even really matter.

I may have lost track of the OP question.. what was the question again?

No kidding! Peter Backstrom must have the best job in the world. Actually, I wouldn't even call it a job. More like a mission or life purpose.

yeah, seriously. well, just about any (european) car museum for that matter.

anything where I could scuba dive (assuming I got more experience) or sail racing yachts (again, the same). perhaps day trading two or three stocks while doing either of the above (not at the same time, of course).

ken, it's funny to see you as a "junior member"
