Volkswagen - The German people's car

Anyone else think the new Passat CC is a step in the wrong direction... along with the new Jetta and new Passat. The biggest thing is it just looks cheaper...

The new "unified" look of the grille across the range looks soooooooo boring.

I find the new Jetta's DRL so tacky and plain ugly when lit, cheapens the entire front look:

I think it is a step in the right direction for VW. The new Passat is about $7K less expensive than the previous one which is a huge difference. And the increase in size makes it much better suited for the North American market.

VW was in between average and premium cars in the US. The Passat was too expensive and too small for the midsize sedan buyer but not on the same level as the big Three from Germany.

I saw the new Passat last weekend and thought it looked very nice. But I like neutral looking cars and this fits right in. If you want a premium VW, buy an Audi.

I completely agree - and now the Passat is priced and sized to properly compete with the Accord and Camry. I saw one a while ago and really like it too. Now if they could only figure out how to make them as reliable as the Japanese cars....

I really like the revised CC, especially the tail lights - I always hated the rear end of the current CC.

The mean, wicked and evil eyed look is starting to wear on me. Now, show me some total performance lamps with no radical cut off areas or dark spots.

They don't make me jump and want one.

Not a fan of new VW's. I was a the VW dealership looking at a used Saab and couldn't help but look at a new Jetta. I mean its actually a pretty nice looking car, but just horribly boring looking!

They look terrible in pictures though. But not horrible in person. Would I own one? Absolutely not.

If for some reason I was absolutely fixed on buying a new car, and I had a pretty limited budget, it would be pretty high on my list. Even though I find them bland and soft, for their price, it's better than almost anything else out there (new).

Overall, I like the new Passat, just wish they hadn't killed the wagon for the North American market.

    VW Eurovans ?

Sorry if a bit off track but I am stopping by my former mech's place tomorrow. I noticed a 1995 VW Eurovan for sale on his web site.

Any comments on how reliable they are? Real dogs? Any comments appreciated.

I thought this was quite interesting. Retro Bus: VW Selling New Old Microbus Camper in the Netherlands - WOT on Motor Trend

I didn't even know they still made this in Brazil. Not cheap but still pretty cool. I am assuming the quoted prices include Dutch taxes (about 60% or so..)

Ordering a new-old T2 camper van isn’t exactly cheap: pricing for the Kombis runs between 45,000 and 56,000 Euros, which is the equivalent of $62,000 to $77,000. Given that pricing – not to mention it’s very unlikely the Kombi could be made FMVSS-compliant – don’t expect these retro campers to head stateside anytime soon.

From what I know, they are pretty reliable as long as they have been treated right. Parts are decently expensive (I hear it's upwards of $200 just for the parts for new brakes).

This is actually a decent thread from VW Vortex...
    VWVortex.com - Thinking of buying '99 Eurovan...advise please

Personally, I'm split on them. Yeah, they are unique and different, but I think there is just something that is lacking... something missing that keeps them from being as cool as a Vanagon or a Bus.

Vell danke shoen! That $2,400 for chain guides at 100k is pretty spooky though.

The Volvo is giving me problems again, nothing serious, perhaps power steering pump and wife forgot and put on the handbrake (sticks), yesterday. That is enough for me to entertain a change.

They also have an Inspector Morse MkII Jag, a 64 in drop dead shape for like $14,000. The woodwork is spectacular. Too nice.

Pitty ... the danke schoen part .. reminded me of Wayne Newton. I was reading last year where he just abandoned his (still making payments on), Fokker jet at some county airport where it sat till it is rotting. I guess it has been rough being 13 years old all your life?

I'm really liking the new Passat, especially in TDI form. Too bad only the entry-level SE has the manual transmission. Another minor complaint is a lack of rear vents in a car of this size. Now that I have kids, that has been a feature I look for when shopping - one less complaint from the back seat is very much appreciated!

    The Opera Red looks incredible:

On a side note, I'm mildly amused that since MT announced the Passat as Car of the Year, the VW build-your-own has been down. Looks like their website is as reliable as their cars!

    Cool paranioa ?

I have always had a thing for "backup" almost everything. Why trade a good running but aging Volvo when the car you buy may be problematic?

It's mine but she borrowed it. The "P" brake has always been a problem and it is almost better to not use it. I had a piece of foam pipe insulation around so you had to remove it to actuate it so now it's jammed again.

When I was in school and had no money and cars were cheap, I always had a $50 MG that I was working on in case the $200 Honda really broke. Everything was pretty cheap, even insurance.
