    What's in a name?

    I am sure I'm not the only one who names his cars. So what do you name yours, past and present? Post a picture of the car if you have them.

    I'll start with my current cars, all Saabs.

    The first one I bought is a 900 SE Turbo, named Snabb. Snabb means fast in Swedish, which I thought was appropriate for a turbo four cylinder.


    Next is my 900i, which I named Saabine, since I bought her in France she gets a proper French name.


    Then it's my 9-5 Aero, named Heidi. She is originally from German-speaking Swiss so she gets a Swiss name.


    Moving on to past cars, the first one, last one I sold, was a 98 Wrangler Sahara that I modified to be a pure off road machine. The Wrangler was named Stimpy. My nickname is Ren (most Americans mispronounce Renato...), so it was fitting that Ren and Stimpy off road together.


    Before I had Saabs I had two Jeeps, the other being a Jeep Patriot with the off road package. It was a true Jeep and followed Wranglers on nasty trails. It was simply called "Pat" after its model name.


    Before I had Jeeps I had two Subarus. The nice one was a 2008 Subaru Forester X Sport. Great car for Alaska. It was named Smurf because of the color.


    The crappy one was a 91 Loyale Wagon 4WD, which I paid $400 for. It was named "The Turd" because that's what it was. It had four wheel drive, good seats and a heater. In Alaska cars like that are called "a beater with a heater". Appropriate


    Turd was actually pretty reliable. It ran fine in the winter, never broke even at 30 below, but overheated in the summer. It even did pick up truck duty, seen here filled to the gills with fire wood. Fold the seats and lots of wood fit inside! My home was 1 mile uphill and Turd never gave up going home even loaded.


    Before the Subarus we had a Prius. Yes, I drove a Prius. My wife really wanted one when we moved to the US from Korea, so we bought it new, fully loaded. The car was great at what it is designed to do: achieve great gas mileage. We drove from California to Virginia and back and averaged 45 mpg, cruising at 85 mph in the fastest sections. The car was comfortable and has lots of interior room, but it is booooooring to drive. It's a very efficient machine, like a dishwasher. Also as exciting as a dishwasher. It was named "The Electric Blueberry". Lame name for a lame car. I lucked out because when I bought it there was no waiting period to buy a new Prius, but then I sold it Toyota was backordered. I sold the car for $5000 over what I paid for it, and it had almost 20,000 miles when sold. One of few cars I ever made money on the sale.



    When I lived in Korea I owned a few Korean cars, no pictures of them.

    My wife's 93 Elantra was named "Ddong" (yes, two Ds, sounds like a mix between a D and a hard T), which is the Korean version of "turd". It was most definitely a beater, and her being a new driver at 29 years old, it got beat up a little more.

    I had an 87 Daewoo Tico. Tiny, tiny car, it is basically a Suzuki Kei car made in Korea. It had a 600cc engine, five speed gearbox, electric windows, and even air conditioner! The air conditioner was handy at slowing down the car, so if you needed to stop in a hurry just press hard on the brakes (I never seemed to be able to lock the 12 inch tires), and turn on the a/c! To say the car was frugal is a misnomer. The car ran on gas fumes. The car was utterly reliable and I wish I could have brought it to America, I bet it's still running around today. It was named Matchbox, because if its size.

    Before the Tico I owned a 91 Kia Pride, which is the same car as the Ford Festiva in America. It was a great little car, ran every day, until one day the engine overheated on the highway It was named Ruby because it was red.

    Before Korea I was in California and owned a 2000 Hyundai Accent. It was simply called The Bullet because it was silver. It was the first car I ever bought new.

    I bought the Accent after someone totaled my previous car by slamming into it while I was at the movies. It was a 96 Suzuki XL7, a great big SUV, only one I ever owned (I don't consider the Forester an SUV). It was a gas hog but it was great for exploring the California desert and going out camping and hiking with buddies. It was called Burro because it lived and explored the Mojave Desert like the burros do.

    Before the XL7 I had a 1971 Ford Courier pick up truck. It was a junkyard rescue and looked like crap, but ran every day, even in the hottest California desert day. It was called Sharpie because it was cheap, and black.

    The last car I had before the Army was a '77 Mercedes Benz 300D. A great car. It was named Vanilla, as it was all beige.


    Before the Benz was a very fast '87 VW Scirocco 16v. It was called Schnell, because it was schnell.

    I had a few unremarkable cars before that that I would like to forget (like a '85 Dodge LeBaron Turbo, yuck), and can't even remember their names.

    The first car I drove was a 1985 Fiat 147S, which was my mom's, and was named "Sanguinario", which in Portuguese means Bloodthirsty. It was Ferrari Red, the actual color name in the Fiat catalog for that year.

    So what are your past cars and their names?
