Saab 9-5 key remote battery replacement

    Supplies needed: CR1632 battery
Tools needed: Small precision screwdriver, large paperclip or other metal wire
    Difficulty rating: 1 (scale 1 to 5)
    Time estimate: 5 minutes

The SID will display a message when the battery needs to be replaced. I tried to find these CR1632 batteries in local stores but no luck. I found them on eBay and paid $3.49 for 2, including shipping.

There is a hole on the side of the key (see red arrow). It's easiest to use a small precision screwdriver because a paperclip or other metal wire may not be strong enough to push the back cover off. Replace battery and put cover back on.

If you press the key buttons after replacing the battery and nothing happens, start the car with the key so it can synchronize with the TWICE module in the car. It should work fine after that. Or follow the WIS instructions below.

    Instruction from the WIS

    To remove

    1. Open the cover by pressing in/down in the hole using a small screwdriver 1.2-1.4 mm in diameter.

    2. Press the retaining heel away from the battery.

    To fit

    1. Insert the new battery under the two contacts and then press down to secure the battery under the retaining heel.

    2. Fit the cover.

    Important
Make sure the lid is fitted correctly and is properly sealed to comply with waterproof requirements.

    3. Press the remote's unlocking button at least 4 times to synchronize the remote with TWICE.
Note: The car must be within range when this is done.

    4. After synchronizing, the direction indicators should flash when the remote is operated.

The 9-5 has a thing that tells you that the battery needs to be replaced? Wow... they should of had something like that in the 900 before they decided you car basically becomes a very loud paper weight if the battery in the fob, after you've locked your car with it. I've been stuck at places twice after having the battery die while I was away from home. Both were a long walk to a drug store to buy new batteries.

That's not all; the SID also tells you when your engine has sludged up and needs replacing.

It says in the owner's manual that you should change it right away... Will I have to take it to a dealer if I've waited till the battery is completely dead? Or would that have any real affect on synchronization after replacing the battery.

When removing the cover be careful not to apply to much pressure. I changed my batteries and wound up buying a cover for the battery. $5.00

Sometimes it do, sometimes it don't.

I have an 03, the battery remote light warning came on, I replaced the battery within a week. It was OK. However when I opened the cover to replace the battery with a paper clip, I pushed too hard on the release and broke the latch. I had to spend another $5.00 for a new cover. The moral to the story, let's be careful out there.

The last battery I bought was at Amazon, 2 for around $5.00 free shipping, be sure to look at the model # because they have a tendancy to give you a bargin on the wrong part number.

The car should still start as long as you can unlock it with the fob. If you have locked it with the fob, and then unlock with the key, it will not start.

We can start the car and lock but not remotely. Only with the physical key.

The car starts and operates. Just the remote does not lock or unlock the car. I messed with it and pushed the remote buttons a few times after starting it. Then remove the key and it sometimes works. Butthen after a day or a few hours it stops. The does start and work fine. Only problem is the the remote function.

Veronika, did you get it to work again? Just curious what the problem was.
