This is your chance to own a piece of Saab rally history in the USA. This Saab 900 "Pikes Peak" was part of the GM Heritage Collection and was auctioned in Scottsdale, Arizona from January 10th to 18th. Auction records show it was sold for $5,170 and is currently offered for $29,900 by MotoExotica in St. Louis, Missouri.

It was also auctioned in 2009 by the same auctioneer Barrett-Jackson and sold for $8,470. It is not immediately clear where this car spent its time in the last 6 years.

Saab conquered the mountain with a 900 Turbo that is virtually identical to one that’s available right off the showroom floor, right down to the leather-lined interior and optional walnut dashboard trim. Rules allow very few modifications to the car other than a racing seat, five-point safety belts, B.F. Goodrich racing tires, roll cage and other safety equipment. The 185-hp 2.0L four-cylinder engine is turbocharged and intercooled, matched with a five-speed manual transmission. High altitudes sap the power from most engines, but turbocharging helps to overcome the effects of the mountain’s thin air because the turbo pressurizes the intake air for the engine.

MotoeXotica is pleased to present this 1997 Saab 900 Pikes Peak Rally car. This car recently left the GM Heritage Collection, but it’s still worth mentioning (maybe more so now that it’s gone). It was sold at auction in January along with a larger collection of historical GM concepts and test vehicles. It’s sad that this was the one GM let go, because the NG, or “New Generation” 900 was the foundation of the GM era at Saab. Money was tight when the company was working on this successor to the 99/900 throne, and had GM not cut in and taken ownership, the 900 and the company as a whole may have folded in 1989. This car was the Talladega 9000 of its decade, used in the same manner to demonstrate the toughness and reliability of another new Saab. Using the tried-and-true turbo four rather than the new V-6, the 900 Pikes Peak pulled its way up to the top of Colorado’s meanest peak. Basically stock, the car was modified only with a roll cage, racing seats, and at least 10 hp worth of go-fast sticker.

This is a modified vehicle. Neither GM nor MotoXotica make any warranty or representation of any kind, express or implied, concerning the vehicle, including no warranty of merchantability or fitness for a particular Purpose. The vehicle is not certified to comply with any Federal, State, or local laws, rules or regulations and may not be driven on public roads. This vehicle will be conveyed to buyer with a “Scrap” title.

I saw that this car went for just over 5k at the recent Barrett Jackson auction, and I said had I been there I would have bought it for that price and autocrossed the ever loving beans out of it. Seeing the title of this post I thought I might now have my chance. $29,900 is about as crack pipe of a price as you can get. I am disappoint.

The asking price seems a little steep when you consider it is basically a 900 with some racing seats and a roll cage.

They are also taking bids on eBay so it will be interesting to see a more realistic price that someone is willing to pay for this car. Saab 900 NG "Pikes Peak" | eBay

For $29,900 you could probably build a 900 that had over 500HP and all the roll cage, racing seats, and coil over suspension your heart could desire. And have enough money left over to buy a second 900 to keep as a daily driver.

They are banking on the Pikes Peak history to increase the value and I don't see that happening.

My interest in the car has nothing to do with the Pikes Peak history, although it would make an interesting conversation starter.

Wow they're asking alot for that thing! I agree with CaptainMediocre, you could build something faster for far less. I like the combination of cage, racing seats and wood dash, though!

This is what I consider a very important post. Reading this immediately brought back memories of an article I read about the SAAB USA bankruptcy auction a few years back. Information around the auction was not made readily available to the SAAB Enthusiasts community, the very people that could have benefited the most from the parts that were sold. To my understanding everything went to non-SAAB "scavengers"; new motors and transmissions sold for approximately $200 without any bidding. Certainly these items were marked up and later marketed to us.

I am all for people making a living, however, I regularly see non-SAAB people pulling a perfect leather SAAB seat from the junkyard for $25, mark the item up 900% and then peddle them to an unsuspecting SAAB person for $250. If we would make the effort to post information like this Pikes Peak car and most importantly the sales history, we help to keep SAABs and SAAB parts in the family and protect fellow SAABers from being price gouged.

I think this car is beautiful with a real place in SAAB History. I hope it goes to a true SAAB enthusiast who will cherish it for what it is.

I don't know who it is going to end up going to, but I absolutely guarantee there is no person on this earth who will pay $29,900 for it. It will be back at another auction within 2 years.

Yeah, that is the article. Thanks, for the link -- I had not seen any pictures of the auction before.

30k is indeed a stretch, however, a high four or enough very low five figure bid would not surprise me.

The auction on eBay ended with a highest bid of $7,900. That's probably an accurate market value for this car.
