Have you looked at the fuses or relays?

Your reasoning is fine. I was just throwing out some ideas to check as well as what you had diagnosed. These cars are pretty heavily reliant on the electrical systems and they tend to get all wonky...

Have you verified that your alternator is charging properly? What about your fuel pump?

Am I missing something or wouldn't an iPhone 5 work perfect for your needs?

Both my 05 9-5s that i bought with low miles so they were dealer maintained have the same orange stuff(dexcool) in both if that helps.

You can do either. It is recommended you change the entire assembly since the those parts have a similar wear lifespan. It's your call once you have it off and see what it feels like.
