i think you got it right that the thermostat is stuck open. They recommend to use original ones only. I've used a cheaper OEM before, but the rubber seal failed and started leaking from there.

when you are on boost, all lines are pressurized....
when you are on boost, all lines are pressurized. use some cable tie to hold it in place, or get a smaller diameter vacuum line.

I've done it and it's the same. The only tricky thing is getting that ashtray out. There're 4 tabs that you would have to pry to get it out. Becareful cause the retraction gear for it tends to drop...
