Thanks! I think I understand that. FWIW for years now I sometimes felt the gearbox moving around on bouncy roads or rapid de/ac-celeration.

Manual Shim Failed and Now Shifting is a Drunken Mule
A couple weeks ago I had the linkage on my manual wagon replaced, and at the time they also epoxied in the shim on the shifter that supposedly keeps it from getting thrown too far to the right....

On the hatch, it says 2.3 T - might be a lower case t.
What I've found so far does look like 16" though - the current tires are 55R16 (IIRC). -
