The 2003 has the old Kenwood system and it has several other parts besides just the head unit. The actual nav system unit is in the back of the car. You would have to source all those parts including all the wiring and install it in your car. The newer 2004+ Denso unit has everything in the head unit itself so much easier.

Even if you want to go through all the trouble and the head unit is divorced from the donor car with Tech2, it is still a 15 year old nav system with outdated map software. It's just not worth it.

Given that he has a "parts car" I would imagine that all the parts are available however, extracting the necessary wiring looms from said parts car won't be easy. Additionally, GPS technology has moved along in the last 14 years so even a low cost third party head unit will probably out perform a 2003 OEM system. In my view it really isn't worth the effort to remove all that from a 2003 model and try to fit it to a 2000 model, unless it is the achievement that counts.

Personally I would buy a double din Sat Nav head unit and upgrade the speakers, the results will be better.

I had the Denso navigation in a 2005 9-5. While it was even outdated 5 years ago, I enjoyed the all integrated system and the head unit that looks great in the dash. The female voice was also one of the most pleasant I experienced in any nav system. So I understand where you're coming from wanting to have the stock system.

The 2004-2005 Denso system has everything contained in the head unit with just a GPS antenna mounted under the dash. If you can make the connections between the head unit and car wiring, that would be an easier way to go. And you still have the factory Saab look/feel while having a newer nav system. However, I don't have any experience with he older 2003 Kenwood system so I don't know how they compare.

In view of what you are suggesting, I strongly urge you to obtain a copy of the Saab WIS (Workshop Information System) as this will answer many of your questions. A copy of the EPC (Electronic Parts Catalogue) would also be of great value.

A Google search for WIS and EPC should be sufficient, you may have to follow links in other another forum.
