Engine ticking after driving at higher speeds, e.g. 90 km/h

    Hello,

recently my 1997 SAAB 9-5 2.0 started generating an engine sound coming from the upper part. This happens only after driving with higher speeds. After a short break the engine sounds normal at start-up.

I opened the hood to record this.

Thanks for any tips on what I'm dealing with here.

My first thought is it sounds like valves. These engines have hydraulic tappets and usually you have valve and tappet noise at start-up when the tappets need some time to get pressurized.

It is mentioned in the WIS about noise at higher speeds and return to normal at idle:

    7. Noise which occurs at high engine speeds and disappears when the engine has been
idling for a shorter or longer period. This noise is due to an excessive amount of air in the
oil at high engine speeds. The ingress of air is caused by leakage on the suction side of
the oil pump, such as a leak in the suction pipe.
I never heard of this before but thought I should mention. With a a 20-year old car, anything seems possible.

    From this thread: http://saabworld.net/showthread.php?t=27457

It doesn't really sound like the rattling sound of a loose timing chain.

Thank you for your opinion. This was my first thought as well. I'll do an oil change and check the pickup screen with an endoscope to see if it's not clogged. It doesn't sound like the chain or rod bearings.

Be sure your PCV is updated for the #6, and don't neglect the oil level let it in the middle of the marks...don't let the level going down ...risk of seizure !!!
    use like recommended 0-30/40 oil.

I'm in the process of changing my oil, only approx. 3 liters came out! Out of 4! I'm not a happy bunny.
I swear the dipstick had oil on it every time I checked. I guess you can't trust that too much. Bad design. Silly me.

Now time for the endoscope. Hope I don't find too many metal chunks in the sump...
