Saab 9-5 is equipped with a wash/wipe system for cleaning windscreen, headlamps and rear window. The wash/wipe system for the rear window is available on 5-door cars. The headlamps are cleaned with high-pressure washers and do not have wipers.

The system functions are controlled using a lever on the right-hand side of the steering column and with the rain sensor and DICE control module, see DICE (dashboard electronics).

Wiper systems without rain sensor are controlled with a lever on the right-hand side of the steering column and with the rain sensor and DICE control module, see DICE (dashboard electronics).

The washer and wiper system comprises:

    Rain sensor
The rain sensor is located inside the windscreen, in front of the rear-view mirror. The rain sensor is a control module with its own logic and is activated by moving the wiper stalk switch to automatic position. The rain sensor detects water or snow on the windscreen and activates the windscreen wipers. A light sensor measures the external light so that the rain sensor will be able to adjust its sensitivity to the surrounding light.

    Windscreen wipers with rain sensor
The windscreen wiper unit is located under the cover below the windscreen and comprises a motor, arm linkage and two wiper arms with wiper blades. The function is controlled by the rain sensor using two wiper relays.

The windscreen wiper operates at two speeds (high/low) and automatic. In automatic mode, the rain sensor sensitivity can be adjusted using a control on the wiper stalk.

    Windscreen wiper without rain sensor
The windscreen wiper assembly is located under the cover beneath the windscreen. It consists of a motor, an arm linkage and two wiper arms with wiper blades. The operational functions are controlled by DICE with the help of an intermittent wiper relay.

The windscreen wipers have two speeds (high/low) and one intermittent wiper position, the frequency of which can be regulated to intervals of between 2 and 15 seconds by a control on the control switch.

    Rear window wiper
The rear window wiper is located on the tailgate and comprises a motor and a wiper arm with wiper blade. The washer jets are located by the wiper arm mounting on the tailgate and direct the washer fluid upwards on each side of the wiper blade.

The function is controlled by DICE. The rear window wiper has an intermittent position. The interval between wiper strokes cannot be adjusted.

    High-pressure headlamp washing
A washer jet is located in front of each headlamp and is activated by pressing the windscreen washer control for longer than 0.5 seconds.

    Washer assembly
The washer unit is located in the front left wing. It comprises a fluid reservoir with two or three pumps and a level switch. The washer unit also includes hoses to the jets on the bonnet, headlamp washer hoses and jets. See:

    Washer system 4D
    Washer system, rear window (5D)

The function is controlled by DICE. If the fluid level is low, a message is sent to the bus. SID generates an audible signal and displays WASHER FLUID LEVEL LOW.

The windscreen wiper assembly is located under the cover beneath the windscreen. The windscreen wipers are controlled by a changeover switch on the right-hand side of the steering column. The assembly comprises a motor, two wiper arms and an arm linkage that converts motor rotation into wiper movement. There is a built-in thermoswitch in the motor that trips if the control switch has been activated and the blades have jammed (frozen).

There are three modes of windscreen wiper operation:

Size: 10.6 KB

    1. Automatic
The rain sensor controls wiper motor operation from intermittent to high speed.

    2. Low speed
The wiper motor is activated at low speed, without the use of the rain sensor.

    3. High speed
The wiper motor is activated at high speed by the rain sensor

    4. Washing
The washer pump is activated and DICE activates the windscreen wipers.

In the automatic position, a function allows the sensitivity of the rain sensor to be varied using a potentiometer. The wiper interval depends on this sensitivity. The potentiometer controls the rain sensor which activates the wiper relays.

The rain sensor is activated by moving the control lever on the right of the steering column to automatic position, which is the same as the intermittent wiper position on cars without rain sensor. The wipers will make one reference stroke after the rain sensor has been activated, partly to calibrate for a clean windscreen and partly to inform the driver that the system is active.

The rain sensor assumes control of the windscreen wipers from the DICE. The system switches between no wiping, single sweeps and continuous wiping at low or high speed, depending on the amount of water or snow on the windscreen. The sensitivity of the rain sensor increases at night-time.

    Functions in various conditions

    • Splashes - When a shower of water washes across the windscreen, high-speed wiping is activated until the water is removed.
    • Worn-out wiper blades - When the wiper blades are worn out or dirty, a thin film of water builds up over the rain sensor, which the sensor avoids wiping unnecessarily.
    • Dirt - When the rain sensor detects that the windscreen is dirty, the windscreen wipers are not activated until the windscreen is first cleaned.

    Automatic position

The wiper motor has a built-in, mechanically controlled switch (31B) that is supplied with voltage irrespective of the position of the switch (61). This means that the function need only be activated by a start pulse from the rain sensor (649).

When the switch (61) is set to the J position, current is supplied from pin 10 on switch (61) via the potentiometer (618) to pin 3 of the rain sensor (649). The rain sensor grounds pin 7 or pin 7 and 8 depending on the wiper speed selected by the
    control module.

When the rain sensor selects to activate low-speed wiping, pin 7 is grounded by the control module which closes the relay (83). Voltage is fed to pin 9 of the switch (61) and out on pin 8. Voltage is then fed to pin 3 of the motor (62F). Voltage supplied to pin 3 of the motor (62F) is equivalent to low-speed wiping.

When the rain sensor selects to activate high-speed wiping, pins 7 and 8 are grounded by the control module which closes the relays (650) and (83). Voltage is then fed to pin 4 of the motor (62F). Voltage supplied to pin 4 of the motor (62F) is equivalent to high-speed wiping.

Switch (31B) controls the voltage so that the wiper motor always returns to the parked position after the voltage from the switch has been broken. When the wiper motor reaches to the parked position, the mechanically controlled switch breaks the voltage and the motor stops until the next start pulse is emitted by the rain sensor. Pin 2 of the rain sensor is supplied with voltage when the motor is running.

The wiper motor has a built-in mechanically controlled connector that receives power
regardless of the switch's position. The connector controls the power supply so that the wiper motor always returns to the parking position once the supply of power from the switch has been broken. When the wiper motor reaches the parking position, the mechanically controlled connector breaks the supply of power and the motor stops.

    Low speed (I)
The windscreen wipers operate with approximately 48 double strokes per minute.
When the switch (61) is placed in position (I), +54 voltage is supplied to the switch via fuse 37. Pin 8 in the switch supplies power to pin 3 in the motor (62F).

    High speed (II)
The windscreen wipers operate with approximately 73 double strokes per minute. When the stalk switch (61) is in position II, +54 voltage is fed via fuse 37 to the switch. The voltage is fed from pin 7 of the switch to pin 5 of the rain sensor (649). The rain sensor grounds pins 7 and 8 which closes the relays (650) and (83). Voltage is then fed to pin 4 of the motor (62F). Voltage supplied to pin 4 of the motor (62F) is equivalent to high-speed wiping.

The wiper switch has three positions:

    • Intermittent (J)
    • Low speed
    • High speed

There is a function in the intermittent position that enables the frequency of strokes to be regulated by a potentiometer. The wipers come on at an interval of 2-15 seconds depending on the setting selected. The potentiometer for the intermittent wiper controls the DICE control module which operates the wiper relay.

    Intermittent (J)
There is a built-in mechanically controlled connector (31B) in the wiper motor that receives power, regardless of the switch's (61) position. As a result, the intermittent function only requires a start pulse from DICE to become active.

When the switch is placed in position (J), power is supplied from pin 10 in the switch (61) to pin 21 in DICE (628). The control module emits a start pulse from pin 58 which activates the relay (83). Input voltage is supplied to pin 9 in the switch (61), with output voltage at pin 8.

The power supplied to pin 3 in the motor (62F) is equivalent to the low-speed position. The potentiometer (618) in the switch (61) is connected to DICE (628) at pins 55 and 33. Resistance varies between 0 and 1 kohm. The lower value is equivalent to the short interval (2 seconds) and the higher value to the long interval (15 seconds).

Connector (31B) controls the power supply so that the wiper motor always returns to the parking position once the supply of power from the switch has been broken. When the wiper motor reaches the parking position, the mechanically controlled connector breaks the supply of power and the motor stops until it receives the next start pulse from DICE.

    Rear window wiper

When the ON/OFF button is moved from OFF to TIP (towards the steering wheel), the rear window wiper will start in intermittent mode and make one stroke every 8 seconds. This period is controlled by DICE and is not adjustable.

If the button on the end of the wiper stalk switch is depressed, the rear window washer will start and the wiper will operate continuously as long as the button is kept depressed. The rear window wiper performs 3 strokes after the rear window washer button has been released and then once more 8 seconds after the last stroke.

If the windscreen wipers are operating either intermittently or continuously and reverse gear is engaged, the rear window wiper will start in intermittent mode. The rear wiper is active until reverse gear is disengaged.

When the switch (61a) is made, +54 voltage will be applied to the intermittent wiper relay (83a) and the switch (61a) via fuse 4. Pin 19 on DICE (628) is supplied with voltage from switch pin 4. DICE pin 12 grounds the relay (83a) and the motor (62R) is supplied with power from pin 2.

There is a built-in mechanically controlled connector (31B) in the wiper motor that receives power, regardless of the switch's (61) position. As a result, the intermittent function only requires a start pulse from DICE to become active.

If the rear window wiper button is pressed, voltage will be applied to DICE pin 42 and the washer pump from pin 2 on the switch (61a). Voltage is applied to DICE pin 68 from pin 5 on the switch (61a). Pin 12 on DICE grounds pin 5 on the relay (83a), which closes. Voltage is fed from relay (83a) to the wiper motor (62R) pin 2. The relay (83a) is grounded for 5 seconds after the switch (61a) has been pressed. This is the equivalent of 3 strokes of the rear window wiper.

Size: 13.2 KB

A washer jet is mounted on a telescopic cylinder in the bumper in front of each headlamp. The washer jet is protected by a cover in the bumper when it is not in operation. When activated, the cylinder raises the washer jet from the bumper and two jets are directed on the headlamp lens.

The headlamp washers are started by activating the windscreen washer switch (61) for longer than 0.5 seconds. The ignition must be turned to ON, the lights must be turned on and the vehicle speed must be below 200 km/h before the washers can be activated. The washer jets are active for 0.8 seconds and then stop for 1.2 seconds, after which there will be another short jet (0.8 s).

Reactivation of the headlamp washers requires 120 seconds to have passed since the last activation of the washer pump or the windscreen washers to have been activated 5 times. If the ignition is turned off and on again, the headlamp washers will operate the next time the windscreen washer switch (61) is activated.

If the washer fluid level is below 1 litre, SID will send a bus message "WASHER FLUID LEVEL LOW" to DICE to prevent the washer pump from being started when the washer fluid level is low.

When the switch (61) is turned on, +54 is supplied from pin 5 on the switch via fuse 37 to the windscreen washer pump (63b) and to DICE pin 68. Dice (628) grounds pin 27 for about one second to trigger the relay (667). The washer fluid pump (668) is powered on pin 1. After about one second, DICE (628) will ground the headlamp washer relay (667) once again and current will be applied to the washer fluid pump (668) pin 1.

The washer system comprises two washer pumps, one for the windscreen and one for the headlamps, and a switch on the right-hand side of the steering wheel. The washers are started by moving the stalk switch towards the steering wheel (spring-loaded).

The centrifugal washer pumps supply washer fluid to the windscreen and headlamp washers. The washer pumps pump washer fluid in hoses to the jets, which are directed on selected areas of the windscreen and headlamps.

There are check valves in the hoses to prevent them from emptying between times the washers are active. The headlamp washer jets are located on the bumper. When the washers are activated, DICE starts the windscreen wipers. The wipers continue to wipe for a further 3-5 strokes after the washers have stopped, depending on the length of time the washers were in action.

After eight seconds, the wipers perform an additional stroke if the speed of the car is less than 20 kph. This function is programmable (YES/NO) with the diagnostic tool. On cars where one is fitted, the rain sensor will activate the windscreen wipers once the washers have stopped.

In order to activate the headlamp washers again, a period of more than 120 seconds must have passed since the washer pump was last activated and the windscreen washers must have been used at least 5 times. If the ignition is turned off and then on again, the headlamp washer pump will operate the next time the windscreen washer switch (61) is activated.

SID monitors the level of washer fluid in the reservoir. If the level is low, the control module emits an audible signal and the words WASHER FLUID LEVEL LOW are displayed on the display.

    Washer system, rear window 5D

The rear window washer system comprises a washer pump and a button on the windscreen wiper stalk switch. The washer starts when the button on the switch is depressed (spring return).

The centrifugal washer pump supplies washer fluid to the rear window washers.

The washer pump pumps washer fluid through a hose to the two jets. The jets are located on the wiper motor shaft and direct washer fluid to selected areas of the rear window on each side of the wiper blade.

There is a check valve in the washer hose that prevents it from emptying between washes.

When the washers are activated, DICE starts the rear window wiper, which continues for about 5 seconds (3 wiper strokes) after the washers have stopped. After 8 seconds, the wipers perform an additional stroke.

If the rear window wiper button (61a) is pressed, voltage will be applied to DICE pin 42 and the rear window washer pump (63c) from pin 2 on the switch (61a). Voltage is applied to DICE (628) pin 19 from pin 4 on the switch (61a). Pin 12 on DICE grounds pin 5 on the relay (83a) and the motor (62R) is supplied with voltage from the relay (83a) pin 1. The relay (83a) is grounded for 5 seconds after the switch (61a) has been pressed.
