Hood Liner What is it's function?

To anyone out there who knows. What is the functionality of the hood liner?

We have chipmunks trying to make a home in my wife's hood liner, and mine.

My plan was to remove it and put in a dynamat liner, which will hopefully remove the problem.

the functionality of the hood liner:
Insulation engine noises outside and inside passenger and,
    - heat coat paint protection issues in the hood.

I've got mine removed on my 900. It was sagging and leaving black stuff on the top of my engine. The engine noise isn't even louder when the windows are down. The only difference is that snow melts off the hood a lot faster. I haven't had issues with it ruining the paint (after all, the inside of the engine bay itself is painted), or even ruining it where I touched up stone chips.

I think the c900 had two different types. The egg-crate foam one disintegrated, and the fibrous one did not. My guess is if you wanted one, you could buy a sheet of egg-crate foam, paying special attention to the max temperature rating.
Ask me a question about your c900! I promise I either can answer it or know someone who can

The later moulded fibrous one's much, much larger than the original egg-crate, covering most of the under-bonnet area.

I forgot to remove the moulded one from my old (rusty) bonnet when I swapped it for a much earlier (non-rusty) bonnet a few years back. But I did throw away what was left of the egg-crate - so I've been running without any insulation at all, just bare tin.

No real issue so far, despite the bonnet being black-painted, so you'd think it'd exacerbate the effects of the heat. That includes towing a car trailer 1500 miles (half empty, half loaded) in ambients up to 30degC+ the other summer. The paint above the turbo & head look just the same as anywhere else. Snow melted a bit more quickly over the turbo & head, but nothing unusual.

Ive had mine off of my 9-5 for two years now with no paint issues or other ill effects whatsoever. I do get a bit more engine and turbo noise, but I like that sort of thing anyways.
