    2000 viggen coupe / 2000 9-5 AERO

    9-2x first post

    So I love saabsaab and subarus but to me the saabaru is 90 percent subaru and 10 Saab. I have a 9-5 aero and a viggen and I figure I would try to find a saabaru. I really want to do a sti swap and call it a 9-2x viggen what do you guys think.

    STi swap is supposedly really easy, the biggest thing is the exhaust system (I think) and then the suspension. I really like the 9-2x even though it's not really a Saab, but I hear the seats are super uncomfortable.

    This is probably warranty issue carry over kind of stuff. The car is with the exception of badges (forget sheet metal), 100% Mitsubishi Heavy Industries.

    And yes there is a recall on some of the suspension components this week. It is on the Sub and the Saa ... I really think that the Subie folks got into a bunch of pissing contests after doing some fixes and then the customer tried to argue that it was 6 of one and half dozen of the other. It is but .. and probably the Subie crew knew what they were doing. Logic and reality do not apply in automotive matters?

    They motors are not EXACTLY the same...when they build the 9-2x Aero engines off of the boxer prints there were differences...even between years and first off the line verses last off the line in 2005 and the stock-engines for replacement. How do I know? I blew THREE engines with my brand new 9-2x Aero within 40k miles of each other. After the second engine 8 Saab mechanics (HUGE labor charge due to the fact none of them had ever worked on a Saabaru), told me that it was all due to the fact that i stopped using dino-oil and switched to synthetic after my few Saab oil changes went away...it seems that whilst maintaining higher RPMs (ESPECIALLY THE AUTOMATIC TRANS BELIEVE IT OR NOT) spin engine bearings due to the tightness of the Boxer engine, the "too-slipperiness" of the synth oil, and the way a flat-cylinder opposing engine gets oil to the bearings.

    And the seats were actually quite comfortable...after you figure out how to mount them when getting in the car! First few times and I had half a seat ridge up the brown-eye!

    I did enjoy racing the 9-2x Aero...had a few kits on it, limiter/governors off, ordered without sun/moon roof and electric seats to drop overall weight...fun little car, but DEFINITELY NOT a Saab. Same with the 9-7x...total GM build. Yeah, they made it look somewhat like one and put the ignition on the center console, but being a Saab owner (the true ones off the line in Sweden), I could tell as soon as i looked at the instrument panel and the air vents of the 9-7's...the 9-2's were completly obvious, and all their carfax reports start with "shipped from factor in Japan...". I'm DONE with any Saab that doesn't come off the Sweden production line...my 900, 9000, 9-5t, and new 9-3 Aero Turbo4 make me happy to drive again...

    To wrap-up my whole 9-2x Aero story...remember when I had blown 2 engines and the third was "partially blown" and no one could figure out why there was compression problems and misfiring on 1 and 3 cylinders...so when the hurricane was coming I parked it on my patio under 2 huge maple trees, then played "bash the Saabaru" with a bunch of huge branches? Well it worked, they gave me over $13k buy-out (auto insurance) but when I asked to keep the car so I could part it out (I was careful where I bashed) they wanted over $5k! So I let them have it...well, this dude from that evil saab92x website bid on it and had it shipped to him when he won it...for $600! HAAAA! He used the parts (he has like 5 9-2's) and a shop, and he couldn't figure out what was wrong with the engine either. So no resolve on that part, buy have been enjoying my 2011 9-3 sedan ever since!

    runsok, did you buy a 9-2X? I would like to hear more about the 9-2X.

    It was a fun, zippy little car...all wheel drive and you could spin them too. Found the speed limiter around 139MPH with about 2k RPM left before red. I got a ticket for 125 in a 55MPH zone the third week I drove it off the lot (it was a nice Sunday morning on a stretch of interstate that had no business being 55MPH). Seats were woven mesh and pretty comfortable, "aero package" came with medal 'racing' clutch/brake/accel pedals. When they first came out I saw a lot of them around NJ, but haven't seen one in a while.

    Darn, I started to chase one and the only place I got up close to one was at the Rt.22 Dealership in Lebanon. For some weird reason it had some "clown hat" imprints in the cloth seats, perhaps to cover up some other accident (by a kid), and one high mile 05 Linear which was a loaner car at Reinertsen. I then decided to focus on a 2006 Aero since it had a larger engine and turbo and 3 (count em'), whole horsepower more than the 05 Aero. But then I learned that there were only about 5 sold per state (250 total), in the whole country.

    We used to be heavy Saab country in this part of New Jersey but it fell apart pretty quickly around the mid/late 90's with Snorts and Specialist closing along with that Lebanon Dealer.
