When I place the Bosch filters in the cart, it asks me for a US Zip and states:

I'm going to try K&N Pro series. Found it on Amazon.com. A little cheaper than Mann. I thought about Purolator, once..... ONCE!! (Johnny Dangerously reference) As for oil, Castrol 10W-30 Full Synth for my '06 9-3. For the others, Mann filters and Castrol 10W-30 non-synth. I change my oil at 5k miles.
When a Saab dies, the world becomes a little less quirky.

I think the biggest problem Saab's have had is the oil being restricted by the the very fine oil strainer that has been fitted in the sump. The oil does need to be clean but you must have not only pressure but enough to cool the internal parts.
Look up this report on the web: SAAB 9-5 Sludge
This is a very serious problem in the 4 cylinder Saab, I know since I own one and have made the modification.
My Saab 93 Sports seems to run ok on synthetic Castrol Edge Sport 5-30w and Valvoline Max Life ATF:

Lifetime BG Protection Plan
I looked around for some more information about BG Products, the products and warranty program that are now being sold by Saab dealers in North America. They are basically additives which you have to use at every service to maintain the warranty protection.
They seem popular with independent repair shops and national chains like Tuffy. Products are sold through a distributor network and can not be bought in stores. Often considered to be another way to increase dealer profits.
Saab (and probably all other major vehicle manufacturers) advise against using any oil (and other fluid) additives. As long as you use a good quality synthetic oil and change it according to the recommended service intervals, oil additives should not be used, in my honest opinion. Especially in new engines.

Does anyone have any experience with oil additives / BG Products? Products that are good for your car or snake oil?

Big oil manufacturers spend millions each year studying oil additives, and if needed they add it at their factory/refineries. I am sure the oil you buy at the store needs no further additive unless it's some kind of gear oil going into a limited slip differential, then you need the LSD additive.

Some of the best computer companies also think they have got everything right until they find a clever hacker that can improve there product and often results in giving that person a job. Progress is what its about.
If the oil companies can make a profit with what they have why should approve of anything that might save you money.

Castrol Edge 5W-40 vs 0W-40
I have been using Castrol Synthetic 5W-40 in my 9-5 for many years because it seems to make the engine run a little bit smoother compared to Mobil 0W-40. When I went to the auto parts store last weekend, I was shocked to see they didn't have my favorite oil anymore...!
But after looking at the other Castrol oils, I noticed the new 0W-40 Castol Edge - European formula and A3/B4 displayed on the front label. Besides the difference from 5W to 0W, not much else seemed to have changed. Still the same specs for the other manufacturers as well:
ACEA: A3/B4
5W-40: API Service SM, SL/CF
0W-40: API Service SN/CF
VW 501 01/502 00/ 505 00
BMW Longlife-01
MB-Approval 229.3
Porsche A40
Ford WSS-M2C937-A (0W-40 only)
The old 5W-40 was made in the US and the new 0W-40 is made in Belgium. The old label shows English and French, new label is in English and Spanish and only for sale in the USA.
It sounds like it is pretty much the same oil with just a few minor changes/improvements. Oh wait.. It's more than just oil. It's liquid engineering!

I am looking for the right oil for my 4 cyl 2L 93 convertible.... the risky one! I am in UK and this thread seems to be mainly US and Canada! Any recommendations? I am happy to use additives too.

Suemax, you should be able to find Mobil and Castrol in the UK as well. However, I think full synthetic oil is quite expensive over there and the cheaper budget brands may become more attractive.
I recently bought some more Castrol Edge and this was a different bottle. Specs are still the same but this one is made in Germany.
