For the oil change interval, does it make a difference how much oil the engine holds? The current 9-3 2.0 has a capacity of 7 liters and the 9-5 2.3 is only 4 liters. I imagine almost twice the amount of oil should last longer and longer intervals are possible?

My old Mercedes burned through a quart of oil every few thousand miles.. There wasn't really a need to change the oil at all.

What's the opinion of having an oil analysis done? Blackstone Labs does it for $25 so it's not a huge cost.

The manual for my 9-4X shows it needs oil with the new Dexos spec. I had no idea what that was so searched around a bit.

    GM dexos information center

dexos1™ is designed for use with gasoline engines and replaces GM-LL-A-025, GM6094M and GM4718M
I have seen it on Mobil 1 synthetic 5W-30 which is available at my local discount store. It basically looks like they took the old GM specs and combined them into a fancy new brand name and logo.

Anyone with a 2.3L 9-5 use a Bosch 72161WS oil filter? It's a brand I trust, and it costs half as much as an OEM filter.

I have used Bosch oil filters before and wouldn't hesitate using them again.

That link shows shipping is $33 which seems quite high. eEuro sells Mann oil filters (Saab OEM supplier) for $60 a case and Saab OEM for $86. Free shipping is US only, not sure what they charge for shipping to Canada.

Saab Engine Oil Filter Case (10 Filters) | MANN-FILTER Part Number W71280CASE | Free Shipping
Saab Engine Oil Filter Case (12 Filters) | Genuine Saab Part Number 22340020CASE | Free Shipping

Autohausaz.com sells the Bosch filters for $3.80 a piece.

eEuroparts charges $50 for shipping and uses UPS which would add a ridiculous "brokerage" fee for paying import duties (~$20-30). Autohausaz doesn't ship to Canada. Even with the $33 shipping, I'll be paying $7.78 + duty (no more than local tax) versus ~$14 + tax at my local dealer.

When you say you've used Bosch filters, have you used the Workshop series before? I don't know if they're of comparable quality to their other lines.

i used the DistancePlus filter and I don't know how that compares to the Workshop series. It's so difficult to judge the quality of oil filters. I usually choose a mid-ranged price filter and stay away from the cheapest or most expensive filters.

AutohausAZ does ship internationally and one of their options is USPS. I don't know how much they charge though. https://www.autohausaz.com/html/freight.html
