    Turbocharger upgrade options

I'm currently running the factory turbo (oil cooled) from my '87 SPG. It's a good turbo, as in it spools up and forces air down the engine's throat like it is supposed to but of course I do want more

Not a whole lot more power (yet) but mainly something that doesn't take so dang long to spool up. I'd guess I should move to water cooled as well, right?

What turbos are good for a mild boost above SPG factory spec? What should I be on the look out for, and can any be sourced off of other cars (9000s maybe)?

A 9000 turbo won't work unless you want to rework (re: custom) the flange and turn the housing. You'd have better luck looking for a TE04 off a late model SPG and switching to a water cooled setup. Mitsubishi makes a solid turbo but I have no idea what kind of boost you'd be making with the TE04. 14 PSI maybe? Good enough for me.

Or you could do a Holset and make things go boom.

You need a Mitsubishi TE05 Turbo, great spool-up (better than the Garret) plenty midrange and good for 20 psi. Should be a straight bolt-on, but you will need to do a bit of simple plumbing for the water feed.

TE05-12B6 was standard on the T16 from about '87 on.

Well then that's what I have probably then. Considering I have an '87 T16 and an '87 SPG

Wait. It'd have to be '88. '87s are not watercooled

Are you really sure your turbo's not water-cooled? There's just a chance you have a Garret TB0357. There is an overlap on the fitment for different markets.

Definitely not water cooled, oil only. I installed it when I got the car

You can always adjust your APC for a better rise rate. Perhaps do one of the more involved mods with your extra APC? I've done the first one described here- APC System with excellent results. (I've done this in conjunction with a 3bar fpr and AID stop mod) I'm holding 16-17psi reliably (bit over half way through red on the factory gauge). My turbo is watercooled but still a t3. I'm just saying that I *think* you'd be more than satisfied with what you already have, with some tweaking. Besides, with a little bit more lag vs the TE04, I'm sure your gearbox would thank you.
