But then i do wonder how comfortable this would be - The shifter may be long OEM, but it rides at a pretty good height and is easy to rest upon

I realise this is an old post and the poster may have been referring to changing gears but I just wanted to nag in and say that one should never rest their hand on the gearstick. It delivers weight through onto the shift forks and accelerates wear of the mating faces of the fork where it thrusts against the synchro sleeve. The Saab transmission repair manual specifies tolerance of 0.1mm each side on the mating faces of the shift fork. The wear can result in gears jumping if severe enough. (although this is more common from a bent fork)

A simple thing to remember to increase your transmissions lifespan/rebuildability
