Ok, No to Land Rover, how about a Cayenne?
The responses about getting a Land Rover were almost unanimous, don't do it unless you are prepared for LOTS of time at the shop.
So....how about a Porsche Cayenne? What do you have to say about them? I figure that it would be a very good alternative to a Range Rover.I feel sorry for people who do not drink. When they wake up in the morning it is as good as they are going to feel all day - Frank Sinatra

Not too sure about them. I personally like them, but I don't know much about them. Just throwing out another idea for an SUV, what about a Mercedes GL430? I hear they're great, and the quality is great on them. My uncle has an S430, same motor, and it's been great. Only downside may be that it might be underpowered with only 275 HP for such a big car. And Not sure if you want to go that big...

I have no knowledge about these monsters, but being Porsches I can imagine service costs must be at the highest level...

Probably more reliable but come on, really? A Porsche Cayenne? Really?!? That's just wrong on so many levels. Keep in mind the distant cousin the VW Touareg was once (and may still be) considered one of the most unreliable vehicles you could buy.
At least with the Rover (see what I did there) you'll get a legitimate 4-wheeler, not some ridiculous poser. I say step up and get a Land Cruiser (of course!), Range Rover or Land Rover, or...wait for it...a MB G500/550.

Land Cruiser would be my number 1 choice had I not dislike the ergonomics so much. I don't need a real off roading car, as a matter of fact the reason why I am asking about the Cayenne is because is "Luxurious", which is high in my wife's criteria, it has to look nice too and just say "Money" (not in the currency kind of way). Chances are that the car will never see anything more difficult than a dirt access road to a park.
Also, I think that the Cayenne has some legitimate off roading capabilities if equipped properly.I feel sorry for people who do not drink. When they wake up in the morning it is as good as they are going to feel all day - Frank Sinatra

Call me shallow but I couldn't have something as ugly as a Cayenne in the driveway.
Land Cruiser? Great for trekking through the wilderness but in an urban environment, an antisocial hulk for people with adequacy issues.
Only one full-size 4WD I would seriously consider -- Volvo XC90.
