Got a TE05 that feels pretty good but has a little axial and longitudinal play. How hard is a DIY Rebuild

It's fairly straightforward provided you follow procedures and mark up components for balance on reassembly. I've done a few and the rebuild kits are cheap enough. This mitsu walkthrough is as good as any so you know what your dealing with. It's virtually identical to yours. http://www.kourtev.com/chris/downloa...ild_Manual.pdf

    Thanks Paul,

That looks pretty easy. Assuming its a good ploy to avoid the cheap rebuild kits on Ebay from China?

Also added a stablemate for my C900 and Discovery 2 and am working on converting my Barn into an official Man Cave complete with 200 amp electric and a 4 post lift.

I used the ebay built kit; so far no problems and on my 2nd oil change after rebuild. its only orings and oil seals your replacing and 2 bearings.... very easy process..

    here is what I suggest:

have the shaft professionally inspected, balanced and scribed by a turbo shop in your area.

then you can take it home and rebuild it yourself and line up the scribes provided for you and you will know its perfectly balanced.

if you have done a few then maybe you wont need the professional assistance, but if you haven't its good insurance oppose to an untrained eye.

be sure to oil everything and fill the turbo oil cooling side before you bolt up the supply line.

Also, when you first start the car the turbo may smoke a bit; don't panic.. From what I have read this is normal.... My one smoothed out after a few minutes of idle speed.

    Good luck,,,

Ordered it, on a slow boat from Taiwan

Thinking FMIC now. I have no AC and am thinking about modifying the radiator mount to allow the piping at the top instead of cutting off the towing hooks and using really long pipes. Going to pop the bumper and grill and see just how much room I have in there. May need to mod the running lights a bit....

Got the TE05 turbo and the OEM rebuild kit. Pulled the turbo apart and it certainly has a few miles on it. Minor scoring on the shaft which cleaned up well with steel wool. Turbine and compressor look good and I scribed all the rotating parts for good balance upon reassembly. The bearings and seals were all beyond their useful service life so it's a good thing I tore it apart before installing it in the car since removing this one requires draining the cooling system. Also was a thread mentioning that the TE05 requires a different oil feed line, so what year cars initially came with this unit as standard?
