Friends '99 is possibly screwed. No start.

A friend of mine has a '99 that's in pretty rough shape. She said the sunroof hadn't been closing all the way lately (and didn't know about the manual close feature) and she had forgotten about it being open slightly and we had a really bad storm last night with a lot of rain. So the interior got completely soaked and it wouldn't start this morning.

Sounds like the TWICE to me. Am I right?

The car is in rough shape, it leaks oil, dented/scratched....etc and now it won't start. I think it would be in her best interest to sell it and buy something else.

How many miles? Regardless, it sounds like it's time to move on. 13 year old European cars usually don't get cheaper to operate at this age, unless they have been pampered and taken care of.

Lots of miles. Not sure how many, and she couldn't remember off hand, but she said it was really high. I'm thinking somewhere around 180k or something. I told her to get a Honda.

High mileage is relative. I have 180k on my 9-5 and its in great shape. Hardly any dents or scratches, the paint shines like a mirror and I wouldnt hesitate to drive it accross the country. I always joke that I finally have the car broken in.

She let it dry it for a day and it started back up. It's running rough though, so I think she's going to part it out.

I don't mean to be rude, but sounds like a bad idea. It sounds like she isn't very knowledgeable with cars, or very mechanical. If she knows someone that is, great. But it's a lot of work to get that one part that someone always needs and is a pain to get to. If someone asked for the timing cover or oil pan, would she know how to get them off or even where they are? And then what once its been picked of parts and you've decided it's not really worth parting it out anymore? What do you do with it? How will you get it there? (Most areas normally have a place that will buy junkers, but most of them don't really want it very much if you've stripped all the parts from it).

She wouldn't know, but I think her dad is pretty knowledgeable about cars. They've owned quite a few Saabs over the years I believe, and currently own a 9000 Griffin. Good point about when they're done with parting it. I guess a local metal scrap yard or something? Like a place that is only interested in the metal. Getting it there wouldn't be a big issue, I've got a trailer and a truck if it comes down to it. The car is worth, at most, $1000 in it's condition. I offered $500 for the whole thing, but got shot down.
