This relay has been used since the 900/9000.
It is advisable to review all welds, can be very small tear that is not easily seen.
Another relay, this has many broken welds:

The circuit 9-5 (the other 9-3, is not much different)

There is a relay, is an electronic circuit(228b), if you look at the diagram, we can see that it is installed after the lights relays (8, 8a).
    Also check the fuses(342a)

big thanks to those who posted this information and instructions

i just had a go at fixing my relay because i lost high beam recently. looking at the relay solder points, several seemed to have problems as described earlier

didnt have a fine solder iron so had to bodge the job a little with a bigger solder iron tip, but high beam is working again on the first try got my high beam back, but lost left low beam. on the 3e try got my left low beam back again and high beam still worked

should hopefully last for a while till i can source a replacement unit

worked for me.Thanks guys.I have a 2003 convertible.1 bulb per side.Thought the it had 2 per side after watching a youtube vid.Changed the 1 bulb same thing.Checked fuses, all good.Assumed it was the relay.I have a bmw relay for light control but was scared to try it.Same exact pin and plug.Pulled the cover off and sure enough i could see the break on the first joint.Re-solder and fixed.

Same thing here, three SAABs, same issue, all three relays had solder crack in in the uppermost contact. All relays had more than one crack so it is advisable to re-solder all contacts just to be sure. Use some resin and/or extra solder with resin core to make sure contacts are well soldered.
