Heat/AC System
My 2003 Saab 9-5 Aero has developed a "graoning" sound. It is related to the heating/ac system. If I lower the fan speed by one setting, the sound stops. Lately, it seems as if this sound is occuring near the center console and also on the left side. Can anyone gie me an idea about what this is?
Thanks.

Does it make the sound regardless if "Econ" mode is on or not?

No it does not. I should have mentioned that previously. Lately the sound seems to migrate and is more apparent on the left side now, but that can change.

My guess is you have a leak in your air-conditioning system. A leak lets the refrigerant seep out faster than normal, and when it gets low enough it can cause a whining or groaning sound when combined with a leak.
My next guess would be a worn bearing in the air-conditioning compressor. If this is the problem, a dealer will most likely have you replace the whole compressor (which is pretty pricey), and that's probably what a indy shop will do, but some are willing to put in a used one which will save some scheckels. I've also heard of people going to air-conditioning specialists and having them replace that bearing.Free SaabWorld Stickers

Thanks very much for the information. The SAAB dealer is supposed to call me and it helps to have this informatiion in hand. Hopefully, I can avoid a new pricey SAAB ac compressor. At the very least I can look on e-bay or other sites to see what my options are. Otherwise, Christmas could come early for me...
Again, thanks.

Don't know if you've heard of Goldwing Saab, but they sell tons of Salvage parts (Used Saab Parts: Goldwing Recycled Saab Parts) so it could be worth a call to them. You'd also be surprised what your local salvage yard has. I've nearly always found those places cheaper than eBay.
Good luck!Free SaabWorld Stickers

Thanks. I will keep this information close. Bringing it in to the dealer tomorrow. We'll see what they say. I will follow up and let you know. Cheers.
