Turbo exhaust leak? Loud noise coming from turbo.

I have a 1999 9-5 SE and I was told by an independent mechanic that I have a crack on the Turbo exhaust manifold. He said it can't be replaced without replacing the turbo because it's attached to the turbo and is one piece. First is this true? Now I don't know if he actually took the turbo off and saw this crack but there is a loud sound coming from the Turbo area. Do you think the exhaust manifold is not tight enough? Or the exhaust gasket is bad? The turbo seems to be working fine but the noise is annoying and gets louder when I accelerate and the exhaust is getting the front of my engine bay dirty. Thanks for your input.

The V6 has two exhaust manifolds and the Turbo is integral with one of them. I would scour eBay and other on-line parts places for a rebuilt used manifold containing the turbo. A new part, if available, would be prohibitably expensive for a 13 year old car. A quick search revealed rebuilts at $850 and new at $1600 from one site. I am sure you can find rebuilts for less than $850 by searching.

The link below offers a brand new center section for only $325. I don't know if this would solve your problems since you described it as a broken manifold.

Yeah, new V6 turbos are not cheap. At one point I remember them being almost $2k, just for the part. Maybe give Goldwing Saab in Hastings, NY a call. They always have what I need.
