    Description

The Saab Infotainment system has three different control modules depending on the equipment selected for the car. Various audio, navigation and telephone systems can be connected to these control modules.

The Audio system has a keypad for the Premium 70 or Premium 150 sound systems. There is no display and only buttons and knobs for the radio and CD.

The Infotainment system with a small display also has a keypad for an integrated phone, in addition to the buttons for the Premium 150 or Prestige 300 sound systems.

The Infotainment System Plus has a large display and keypad for the Prestige 300 sound system and telephone or telematics system. The large display is used for navigation.

All infotainment systems use the SID unit for displaying certain information.

A car equipped with the Premium 70 sound system has 4 speakers, two in the instrument panel and two in the back of the car (4D: in the parcel shelf, 5D: in the luggage compartment, CV: in rear side trim). The main radio unit is the amplifier used for these speakers. To attain Premium 150 level, another amplifier has been added to drive the two speakers in the front doors and a centre speaker in the instrument panel. The Prestige 300 sound system has a total of 13 speakers in the car and a further amplifier for the bass speakers.

The entertainment unit is a radio receiver, the receiver for the CD player, a sound generator for warning tones, the player for both radio and CD and the transmitter for telephone sound. The infotainment system control panel is thus the control panel for the sound system. Information about the selected radio station or the chosen CD and track is in the first instance read from the SID display and thereafter from the control panel display. If the car is equipped with Saab Infotainment or Saab Infotainment Plus, a portable unit such as an MP3 player can be connected to the audio system's AUX connection which is located in the centre console.

An optional single-disc CD player or 6-disc CD changer can be fitted under the ICM in the dashboard. All modules in the infotainment system are provided with anti-theft protection since they are "married" to the car. The entertainment head unit, amplifier, CD player and ICM use the O-bus for communicating with each other.

4D: The heating element on the rear window acts as an FM receiver while AM reception is provided by two separate wires in the rear window. For improved FM reception, the car can also be fitted with a diversity antenna integrated in the AM antenna. An antenna amplifier amplifies and sends the antenna signal to the EHU.

5D: The antennas for radio reception are integrated in the rear side windows. The AM/FM antenna is located in the rear right side window and the FM antenna in the rear left side window. To amplify the antenna signal, one or two antenna amplifiers are fitted to transmit the amplified antenna signal to the main radio unit. The antenna amplifiers are located under the respective rear side window and are available in three versions, one for antenna system 1 and two for antenna system 2.

CV: The radio antenna (FM/AM) is located on the right-hand side of the soft top cover. An antenna amplifier (624b) in the antenna base transmits antenna signals to the EHU via the bypass unit (624a) located at the right-hand A-pillar.

    Detailed description

The main entertainment unit is fitted in the centre of the dashboard behind the infotainment control module. The entertainment unit receives audio and antenna signals from other units in the system. These signals are processed and relayed via the unit outputs to the loudspeakers of the Prestige 70 sound system and via the O-bus to the amplifiers of the Premium 150 and Prestige 300 sound systems.

The EHU has an FM/AM receiver with PLL dual-synthesizer tuner for precise tuning, preset to the market frequency band. The radio receiver has a memory allowing the retention of selected stations in the event the battery runs flat or is disconnected. As soon as the radio is switched on using the SID controls, a message is sent on the O-bus to wake up the other units.

    Infotainment control module

The control panel on the infotainment control module is used to select the functions of the infotainment system. There are three control modules: 1, 2 and 3. The type of control module depends on the equipment selected by the customer, for example:

GPS (Global Positioning System), which is used by the navigation system, comprises a number of satellites that orbit the earth at an altitude of 20,200 km. Due to their comparative locations, at least four satellites are always accessible for the user on the ground. The various car systems are equipped with direction and speed sensors that are used together with GPS to calculate the car's position and navigation. Together, these make it easy for the customer to find a specific address.

In order for the system to function properly, the DVD must be inserted into the DVD player, the infotainment system must be switched on and NAV must be selected on the monitor with the control button on ICM3.

The telephone system in the car is available in three categories: Tel 1, Tel 2 and OnStar.

Tel 1 means that the car is equipped with infotainment system 1 and the telephone has an external mobile telephone provision that can be connected to the system via a connector in the dashboard. Tel 1 means that the external telephone keypad must be used when dialling. The microphone is used for speaking ( 4D: in the headlining, CV: in the left-hand or righthand A-pillar) along with the normal car audio system speakers.

Tel 2 means that the car has infotainment system 2 or 3. Tel 2 provides an integrated phone. The communication unit (4d: under the parcel shelf, CV:at the front edge of the luggage compartment) accepts a SIM card and is connected to the microphone, roof antenna and radio. Infotainment systems 2 and 3 comprise a telephone and display for showing phone functions. The steering wheel controls can be used to make and receive calls, adjust the volume, and scroll through and select numbers from the three call lists. There is a microphone in the roof panel and sound is provided via the sound system's speakers. Tel 2 also provides advanced voice activation (AVR) of the phone, a phone book and SMS text messaging.

The OnStar option has the same telephone system as Tel 2 but with additional telecommunication functions (data communication via the mobile telephone network). OnStar provides guidance and other services, and emergency assistance in the event of an accident. OnStar can be contacted by simply pressing the OnStar button on the instrument panel. The system then connects the vehicle to OnStar and contact is made with personnel who can help with a variety of services. The system automatically calls the emergency services centre in the event of a collision in which the air bag has been triggered. The position of the vehicle can be established with the help of GPS and thus the emergency services can quickly reach the scene of the accident.

The communication unit, radio and control panel use the O-bus to communicate with each other. The communication unit has a so-called Flash memory which means that it can be SPS programmed for additional functions at a later time.

In order to place a call, dial the telephone number with the control panel keypad or use the steering wheel controls. The control panel makes it possible to dial any number and write SMS text messages while the steering wheel controls are used for the telephone numbers stored in the call lists, for example previously-dialled, missed or received numbers.

With the voice control button, which is one of the steering wheel controls, you can add voice tags in the telephone book. By using these voice tags, you can place a call to different telephone numbers just by pressing the voice control button followed by speaking the name of the person to whom you wish to place a call. When you speak the name, the system will repeat what you have said and place the call. This can be a great advantage since the driver never needs to release either hand from the steering wheel, which contributes to safer driving. Additional information about voice control can be found in the owner's manual.

Communication between the audio and telematics units occurs with help from the O-bus.

The telematics unit has a so-called Flash memory, which means that it can be SPS programmed for additional functions at a later time.

    OnStar

OnStar means that the car is equipped with a telematics unit and an OnStar button for aid and assistance, several guidance services and emergency assistance in the event of an accident. In order to contact OnStar, just press the OnStar button located under the audio control panel or under the infotainment control panel depending on the system which has been selected. In order for the system to function properly, you should be located within an AMPS coverage area (US).

When you have activated the system (pressed the OnStar button), an operator will answer and you may make a request and receive information or help.

The system contains a telematics unit with a GPS unit, GPS antenna, OnStar button, microphone and antenna for mobile telephone communication. The GPS and Mobile antenna comprise a single unit that is located on the roof of the car. The system uses the entertainment head unit so that the passengers are able to hear the operator.

The system calls an emergency service centre in the event of an accident during which an airbag has been deployed. With help from the GPS, the car's position can be localised, which facilitates a more rapid response by rescue workers.

The telematics unit, radio and control panel use the O-bus to communicate with each other. The telematics unit has a so-called Flash memory, which means that it can be SPS programmed for additional functions at a later time.
