Stereo problem 2005 Saab 9-3 TiD Vector Sport [150]

    Hi All,

I'm having problems with the stereo system in my 2005 Saab 9-3 TiD [150] and wondered if anyone could help.

I noticed the indicators weren't making a noise and the stereo system wasn't working. After reading the forums i thought that the amp 1 had probably broken and took it out only to find that there wasn't a red light showing when i turned the ignition on. I decided to go to the garage and get a Tech 2 done to tell me the fault. I got a Tech 2 done on Monday but nothing showed up on the system. As part of the Tech 2 i got 30 minutes of diagnosis. They went through the system and found the nav box in the boot had jammed. After pressing the eject button a couple of times the navbox unjammed. They rebooted the system and sure enough the red light was then shinning through the amp 1 connector. Rather than paying them 30 minutes extra labour to take the seat out and fit the amp back, i settled up and fitted the amp back at home (no need to take the seat out as it only takes a couple of minutes to put back in). Sure enough, the system then worked or so i thought.

Whilst the display now works, along with the satnav, radio and cd player, not all of the speakers are working and none of the alert sounds are working such as the indicator noise. The only speakers that are working when the radio/cd player is turned on are the ones that are powered through the amp 1 (door speakers and centre dash speaker). The other 4 are completely quiet (left and right dash speakers and the 2 4" speakers on the parcel shelf (i don't have an amp 2 and the the 6x9s that the prestige 300 model has). The telephone unit still works though (a bluetooth phone system that works offthe AUX port) and this uses the left and right dash board speakers indicating that they are working along with the EHU.

Does anyone know what the fault is or what to start with at least? Obviously a Tech 2 won't help as i have already had that done and no faults are showing. I have obviously checked the fuses in the engine bay, dash board and boot and i have adjusted the fader and balance in the stereo too!

    Thanks in advance

    Jack

Why automakers decided to run everything through the stereo I'll never know.

The head unit could be bad, but thats just a shot in the dark.

    Hi Hirsch,

Thanks for your advice but i don't follow why you think it might be the head unit? Could you explain your reasoning please?

    Regards

That's a bit of a weird problem. Like Hirsch said, things get complicated when they integrate everything. Gone are the days when you bought a new car with out an audio system and just put in a single-din unit with the quality and features you wanted.

The 2003-2006 9-3 makes it even more complicated because of its fiber optic system. I wonder if you BT system bypasses that altogether so that's why your dash speakers still work when using BT. It could be a fiber-optic lead connection problem but that is just a wild guess.

That makes sense, thanks. Any ideas where i find a diagram showing where the optic wire runs so i can follow it along and check all of the connectors?

Check out this thread for a location of all components. I would check the connectors and make sure there aren't any breaks or kinking in the (optic) wires. The optic wires are part of the regular cabling.

It's probably more than you ever wanted to know about the 9-3 bus system but it shows how complicated cars are these days.

I've had a look at the bus and diagnostics and it's pretty complicated! The only other thing I did was take the EHU out trying to fix the original fault and wondered if I didn't put it all back correctly or knocked something off. Before I tear the car apart in search of a broken connector, could I check that everything behind the EHU is right and where it should be?

    1. Should there be a fuse at the back of the EHU and if so, what size? There seems to be an area that looks like it would hold a fuse as illustrated by picture 1
    2. There is a red light showing in the large connected as seen in picture 2 which seems right, should there be a red light showing in the smaller connector (picture 3) also?
    3. The only other thing connected to the EHU is a radio aerial shown in picture 4. Should there be anything else connected to the EHU?

    Thanks again

    Jack

    1. I looked in the WIS and there is no mention of a fuse at the back of the head unit.

    2. The WIS only shows the optical connection on the large connector. It doesn't show the smaller connector in your 2nd picture. Is that connected to the head unit as well?

    3. The large connector is the only one that is connected to the head unit. It does show a smaller connector (3,4,10) which isn't in your pictures. I can't immediately find what that connector is for.

Thanks for your help. The smaller connector connects to the area circled in the picture. I don't quite follow point 3 i'm afraid

I'm not having much luck with this stereo. I just spoke to a specialist stereo shop and he says it is the EHU. He said that the phone doesn't matter as that just proves the speakers are working and they will by-pass the actual stereo unit. Before i go out and buy a new EHU, does anyone know how i can test it? Obviously it must be working to some extent as the radio and CD player work but only through the amp 1 speakers.
