Startup is very rough, engine revs itself and stalls

Did someone say they have an ECU available? My '88 900 Turbo desperately needs one!

'88 and '89 to not share the same engine management system. What is wrong with your '88 T16 to make think you need an ECU?

Unfortunately, the one I have is a N/A ecu. I'm sorry!! Also, dmgb5 is right. You need a LH 2.2 ECU for a turbo car, IF you need an ECU. These aren't hard to find! But make sure you need one before you spend money. We can help you diagnose.

For buying used Saab parts goto www.epartsland.com - they are regulars in the Saab meets and events and always have what you need in stock for older Saabs' pre 2004.

Startup is very rough, engine revves itself and& stalls. After trying a few other things...my mechanic came to that conclusion. My work around has been to hold the accelerator between 2-3 rmps for about 1 minute, then the idle is smooth.

Have you made sure there are no vacuum leaks anywhere? If you've got no vacuum leaks, the next thing I'd suggest is a different air mass meter (AMM). From what I've seen, the LH2.2 ECUs tend to fail all at once (e.g. you'll start the car fine one day and it won't start at all the next day) in the hybrid circuit (the part of the ECU that changes input voltages to voltages that the controller board can read).

Very unlikely to be an ECU problem. As euromobile says, swap in a good AMM.

Interesting how just a few weeks a go my mechanic was certain the ECU was the problem, now it's a vacuum leak. He was also certain the power steering pump was another problem, now it's the rack that has to be replaced. The e-brake cable needs to be replaced, yet they parked my car on level ground... using the e-brake, so it continued to stick while I drove.
I'm more than upset...inspection will cost over $1,800!

Perhaps a new mechanic is in order? Someone whose garage specialises in Saabs would be a good start. These are not difficult things to diagnose if you know what your doing and everything but the steering rack replacement is an easy job...thats assuming he has diagnosed it properly this time.

Mechanics like that are the reason I started to DIY. I got too exasperated one day, and my car's not been back to see the inside of a shop since then.

If you can afford to be off the road for a while, to diagnose and fix all these problems, we can help you get started and turn yourself into your own mechanic!!
