Turbo going out?
So today was the most obvious indicator something is up with my turbo. The intake area has been making odd sounds for around 7-8 weeks now, but took it to a shop and the guy said it wasnt the turbo, but I'm pretty sure he didn't actually check it as we thought it was strictly an intake problem. A few days ago, however the sound changed from a low blowing/intake sound with metallic harmonics to a medium-high pitch grinding/whine whenever the turbo gauge was around the end of the white bar. Today I noticed a plume of dark exhaust that had to have come from my car, as there was noone in front of me. Read Shazzam's post in the 900 forum about his plume of blue exhaust, so naturally, this leads me to think that it's definitely the turbo. Going to call the shop tomorrow morning and talk to the mechanic and tell him the symptoms. Unfortunately my OBDII logger did not log anything but the input voltage today, which I'm a bit ticked about.

take off the inlet hose and see if there is any play in the shaft. There should be none or very little.

Alrighty, will do. Is it accessible without jacking the car up?

Yes, just find a big black rubber accordion looking hose that goes from your air filter to your turbo. Remove it so you have access to the inlet side of the turbo, then you can put your fingers in there (engine off and turbo cold!) and check for play.

Car is in the shop now. Turns out the turbo is shot. They also mentioned something about a misfiring cylinder, hopefully its not related..., among a list of other problems. Apparently the ambient temperature sensor was reading at -40 when they ran some tests.

The misfiring cylinder is most likely the CID, but could be caused by fouled up spark plugs because you were burning oil.

Any OBD codes for the misfiring cylinder?v There usually are one or more if the DIC is dying.

I'll find out in the morning, going to go over to the shop and see what all they've found wrong with it.
They called around to find a replacement turbo, but the only local one they found is 1400 plus a 2 week wait.
I told them I'd look around on the net for something cheaper.
Do you guys recommend any Saab specific parts sites? Found a replacement unit for $877.11 with no core charge here at thesaabsite.com, second from last section. "95 1998-2010 4 CYLTurbocharger Not Aero NC-HS OES" Original Saab part.

I ordered a remanufactured GT17 turbo from XSBoost many years ago. He's currently selling them for $475. Turbos is the only thing he does and has a lot of (positive) feedback. Saab Turbochargers, Diesel Turbochargers items in Xsboost Turbochargers store on eBay!
You can also have your professionally rebuilt for $275. http://www.ebay.com/itm/Saab-Turbo-R...202c12&vxp=mtr
I am not familiar with that vendor and it may take a while.
