    Motor oil thread

It's very common in forums to have an oil thread. Should the tradition continue?

For BMWs, except M models (as in M3 or M5), BMW recommends ( http://www.bmwusa.com/standard/conte...ngineoils.aspx ):

    1. correct viscosity
    2. oil meets BMW Long-life 01 standard
    3. use of BMW High Performance SAE 5W-30 Synthetic Oil (BMW part number 07 51 0 017 866, made by Castrol)

BMW says that the following oils are available in the U.S. and meet BMW Long-life 01:

Castrol Syntec European Formula SAE 0W-30 (possibly discontinued)
    Mobil 1 SAE 0W-40
Pennzoil Platinum European Formula Ultra SAE 5W-30
    Valvoline SynPower SAE 5W-30

There are other oils that list the BMW Long-life standard that are available regionally in the U.S., such as Total Quartz Energy 9000 0W-30 and Total Quartz Energy INEO MC3 5W-30. I have seen LiquiMoly, a German brand, sold by mail order.

I generally agree with BMW's recommendations except I prefer not to use BMW oil. I thought that BMW oil is not a PAO group IV oil, unlike Mobil 1 0W-40. All the oils recommended by BMW are ACEA A3/B3 listed, which adds creditability to their recommendation. Mobil 1 0W-40 is so easy to find that I prefer it. Around Michigan and Ohio, Total oil seems to be easy to find so I might use that if I were in that area.

This forum originally started out as a Saab forum. For those with Saab 9-3 cars (2003-2012), one could use any of the oils listed in a Saab 9-3 and BMW (except M models). I know that Mobil 1 0W-40 and Total Quartz Energy 9000 0W-30 both used to list the GM-LL-A-025 specification but no oil does anymore because they have to pay licensing fees and GM now promotes a Dexos standard, which I believe is not as stringent. Mobil says that 0W-40 still meets the GM-LL-A-025 standard but uses different language to explain it and no longer prints it on the bottle.

Castrol Syntec 5W-40 is an excellent A3/B3 oil. Interesting they list Mobil 1 0W-40 but not that one. I wonder if the specs are the same as for their vehicles in Europe and rest of the world.

When I was in Alaska Lubro Moly was rather inexpensive at NAPA, so I used their 5W30 Turbo Diesel oil, which is A3/B3 compliant. Here in Germay Lubro Moly is damn expensive, so I am using Mobil 1.
