    Saab Clarion Audio System

    Hello fellow Saabers!

I was hopeing to get help from you to continue my little side-project: Saab Clarion Audio System webpage with everything you need to connect and enjoy the Clarion stereos sold with our precious 900/9000 cars. As far as i know they were only sold with US-cars (headunit + equalizer on turbo) (?)

Looking for feedback and of course more information! If you have the Audio Equipment Manuals that i am missing please let me know, and feel free to talk about it here! Anybody here has these stereos in your cars?

    Saab Clarion Audio System MY84-94

    BR,
    Henrik

I'm self proclaimed spectrum analyzer obsessed and have, through trial and error, figured out most of the pin-out for the 86-87 equalizer (pretty recent- which I'll do a formal write-up here one of these days) I say most because I'm only going for the spectrum analyzer display coupled with a modern head unit, and care little about using the equalizer functions.

I figured out the 88+ design a couple years ago, which was comparatively simple, as they kindly labeled the PCB. My findings are here Saabnet.com: 900 BB Post: Original Spectrum Analyzer with Modern CD Player

At any rate, I plan on polishing both methods up with pictures and posting in the tutorials section. The schematics seem relevant to what you're looking for and can use the info if you like. I also have a couple audio manuals, 86-87 eq, 88+ eqs, '88 cd player, 88+ tape players if you want detailed pictures of any of them.

Henrik, that's a nice site that documents the head units installed fom the factory, good job putting that site together, no doubt a handy reference for future collectors of these cars. As they age i am sure some oenwers will want to return their cars to showroom spec.

Drwatson32, that's a unique steering wheel, never seen anything like it!

    Hello!

I had in the past seen your MY88-81 EQ-video and like it a lot, cool to see that you continued to MY86-87 EQ! I have started to look for the pin-out list and reached this far: http://files.doda.se/SaabClarionSter...6-87_draft.pdf and gladly accepting any help. I made a DIN-breakout cable in order to connect the MY86-87 EQ to any stereo-setup but hasnt connected anything yet. You can see the list of the missing manuals, i know its a lot of work to scan them but maybe a picture of the partnumber list would be very helpful. Do you have any info on the slot-in 88-91 CD-player? maybe better pictures?

rpiereck: Glad you like it! Exactly my point with the site, the more the years go by the information gets lost! I just have to continue keeping the site alive. The steering wheel drwatson has was an aftersales steering wheel here in Sweden. Rather unusual and cool its in unique way

Site has been updated with more info and also other branded Saab stereos, i think accessory stereos for new generation 900 but not sure, looks intereseting though!

Also now have the pinout of the 13-pin MOLEX connector from amplifier to the vehicle harness for MY86-87 and plan to post that shortly.

Here are some internal shots of the 88+ equalizer. As you can see, the pin-out was clearly specified on the pcb.

So you've been wondering about the '86-'87 equalizer. The thing baffles me. What you would think are ground wires don't appear to work as grounds. I've had access to 2 units which exhibited the same behavior, but here's the gist of it, by din cable wire colors:
    Red: 12v
    Chassis: ground
That's all you need to power the equalizer up. It'll start in eq mode, for about 5 seconds, then reverts to the spectrum analyzer.
    Blue: 12v for illumination
    Red/white: input (presumably left)
    Brown/white: input (presumably right)

Here's where it gets weird- I could only get the units to power up if I used the chassis as a ground. What was presumably the signal ground didn't seem to work either, so had to ground signal to the chassis, also, on the test bench.

Note: to anyone thinking of trying this, I highly recommend assuming that your grounds work and skip this next part and come back to it if you otherwise have no bar activity. Since I was only aiming to get a visual display, I only used one of the signal inputs. In order to get bar graph activity at reasonably volume levels, you must bypass the corresponding resistor. (Attached is a picture pointing them out. There are 2 pcbs inside the unit, look on the bottom pcb; they're near the white ribbon connector.)

Assumed, but not tested (or simply didn't work for me) wires-

    Inside sheath green: left output
    Inside sheath gray: right output
Inside sheath copper braiding: signal ground
Blue/white: illumination ground, but illumination works without it
    White: mute possibly
Brown: possibly original ground, it's a slightly heavier gauge copper wire
Yellow: might be 12v for memory, but it didn't make a difference on my units.

In my car, I ultimately ran an ungrounded, amplified audio signal to the eq, as grounding the signal to the eq sent my head unit into a protect mode. With this oddball grounding problem, the equalizer will only respond to an amplified signal, so the bar activity is linear to the volume level. This setup could certainly use some additional figuring out; I'm hoping that my 2 units both had an identical ground problem and someone can figure these completely out. Though, in my case, I'm really pretty happy with the end result.

Here's a video of it on the workbench- https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wjvWVqZNlqQ I never did take video of it in the car, but you get the idea. I hope this helps somebody.

It didn't seem like you had any examples of these. I could try to take better pictures if you want. They're the '88 cd player cartridges.
