Did you install the other orings (#4)? While the one you replaced was starting to crack it really doesnt show signs of leaking.

No, I didn't replace anything else. I wanted to see if this was the problem. It is easy to get to so I can open it up again in 15 minutes and replace more if needed.

Can you even get to those #4 rings without removing the pump? I didn't see a way to do that when it is in place.

It's great that there are still some simple solutions out there.

My 03 Aero with 98K started to get a coolant smell when warmed up yesterday. It's been cold here in Colorado front range, single digits overnight. It's happened 2 days in a row, I had to add a bit of coolant to the expansion tank this AM. The car does not overheat, runs fine. I was thinking water pump until I read this thread. I'll get a chance to look at it tomorrow. I'm hoping the O-rings. If not, water pump replacement doesn't seem to tough.

What replacement pumps do we like? Hepu, Saab Original? Beck Arnley? GMB?

Update: Water pump is fine, it's the heater core.

The $0.60 rubber ring fix on my engine is still going strong after 3K miles. No more leaking.

    Hello Frank,
I am new to this forum. I am having the same kind of issue as this. I have ruled out the Coolant Bypass Valve, there is no sign of a leak in that area but there is something near the water pump when I look from underneath(after I took the plastic cover off). I replaced the CBV last year. I wouldn't say that I am that savvy and need further assistance of getting to the water pump and replacing the O ring if that is actually my issue. My 9-5 is a 2004 and doesn't fall in the VIN range given above but I suspect it might be the O ring or it might be the water pump itself??...or something else near it?? Did you do this repair from the top or underneath? Your photos are great, however, if you have some detailed step by step instructions for a novice like me I'd be ever so grateful : )

Where did you buy the o-rings and do you have a step by step for this? Both my 05s may need this...

WIS instructions for this TSB 260-2538: http://saabworld.net/attachments/f14...b-260-2538.pdf

This is the o-ring that failed: https://www.eeuroparts.com/Parts/6233/O-Ring-9146598/

I also ordered 2 other coolant pump o-rings (https://www.eeuroparts.com/Parts/623...-Ring-9146606/) at the time but I can't remember if I installed those or not.

It wasn't too difficult to do this. Basically drain the coolant, remove some engine parts, replace o-ring and put things back together. The WIS instructions are all you need.

Perfect! Thank you. I am probably due for a coolant flush anyway.
