Parts and warranty coverage in the USA

Imagine the worst-case scenario and Saab does go into bankruptcy. And there will be no Saab in the future. What does that mean for parts and warranty coverage in the US? Is GM still required to make parts for 10 years even with the current 9-5 and 9-4X?

If you buy a new Saab right now, is that very risky or should it be safe to do so when it comes to parts and warranty? I am sure it will affect resale value but that was never great with Saabs to begin with.

It worries me as well even though my car was the last model year that was produced in any volume.

Since most of the mechanicals are shared with other GM products some parts will be interchangable. I know that the rear brake caliper off of an 08 Cobalt SS is the same as the one on my car.

This is a comment from SU where I asked the same question.

Jeff September 8, 2011 at 21:59 From my understanding the 9-4X parts were covered in a deal with GM, and GM is responsible to continue their production/stockpile them. Let’s say there’s only 1000 9-4X models ever produced. For GM to produce and stockpile the necessary extra parts that differ from the SRX (they share most power train parts anyway), it isn’t that much of an investment. I seriously wouldn’t worry about it. There will be parts.
Most or all of the powertrain parts on the 9-4X are shared with the Cadillac SRX so there should be no worries there. I thought I heard about the GM deal as well. I talked to a Saab dealer today to see if they have more definite information on that. I also requested more info from SCNA so hopefully more on this soon.

I received this answer from SCNA where I asked what would happen if Saab goes into bankruptcy:

Unfortunately, we do not know what the potential scenario of a bankruptcy means toward warranty guarantees at this time. During a reorganization customer's are protected and Saab is liable to honor warranty coverage.

I was told by Just Saab that they would honor my warranty, no matter what. Even though the 6(5?)yr/100k mile powertrain warranty was through GM, but they told me not to take it to any GM dealer for warranty work.

The 5spd manual in the 08 Cobalt SS was built in Sweden. I assume it is a Saab transmission, but it was much tighter than any Saab manual I've felt.

    some parts ??

Some parts I worry about. Most mechanical items may be shared with other units ... such as a fuel pump or wiper motor. But, now I need a door seal for the rear of the Combi.

Hmmmmmmmmm? That may be a unique one.

But Saab was never fast on things like keys. My wife's 09 (GM), was sent with two defective (wrong), hard keys. During the early reign of "Victor" it took Sweden over a month to send us the correct keys.

I am worried about the door seal.
