Almost Famous: The last three SAABs

    Article from Road and Track:

Three all-new designs went to the dustbin with SAAB's extinction. We mourn what might have been.

By Josh Condon October 21, 2013 / Photos by Jason Castriota Designs

SAAB suffered an ignominious death in 2012, its management desperately grasping at funding throughout a protracted demise. But even as the end neared for the Swedish brand, former design director Jason Castriota—the mastermind behind the Ferrari P4/5by Pininfarina and the Maserati GranTurismo—was penning all-new designs, hoping the company could hang on long enough to birth fresh sheetmetal. Here, he takes us through the never-before-seen Saabs that nearly were.—As told to Josh Condon.

Gawd that Red Sonett concept is hot. I wouldn't have been able to throw money fast enough to a dealer for one of those.

I never really cared for the Phoenix very much but this Sonett concept is looking very good. Especially like that huge glass roof.

I loved both concepts, I thought the Phoenix was a stroke of genius and now seeing these concepts of the sonett I do believe the uniqueness that was SAAB was coming back to what made me fall in love with SAAB in the first place.

    1999 9-3SE (2013-2015), 2005 9-3 (2005-2013), 1990 900 (1990-2003)
The red one is probably the Aero version. I might have gotten the Linear version with not so shiny wheels and no glass roof. I'm just guessing that a Linear version would have been offered.

Muller wanted to change the model naming and possible go back using the 900 designation. So perhaps Linear, Arc, Vector and Aero would have been a thing of the past as well? For the 2009 9-3 in the US, they used Touring, Comfort and Sport which is probably a lot easier to understand for the average customer.

Sonett Touring would be the Linear version. Or they could use the unofficial Sonett name '94' and called it the Saab 94 Touring. Or.. if they wanted to keep the 9-3 and 9-5 names, a better choice would be Saab 9-2 Touring, Comfort and Sport.

I never saw in the US any Saab's referenced as Touring, Comfort or Sport. They did drop the "Aero" badging on the 9-5 for a few years - even thought they had Aero interiors in some (maybe those were the sports?). Got any documentation on that?

Documentation? Well, of course. If Saab enthusiasts have a difficult time keeping track of all the trim names, imagine how it is for the average car buyer.

They only used 2.0T Touring, 2.0T Comfort and 2.0T Sport for MY09. And there also was the 2.0T XWD and Aero. The Aero should have been called the 2.8T XWD Sport?

The 2006 9-5 was available in 2.3T with Sport package which was the same as an Aero. 2008-and-up 9-5 all had the sport seats in both the 2.3T and Aero in the US.
