Keyless remote doesn't work after replacing battery

maybe you can help me with my next problem. I had to replace the battery in my keyless remote now it does not work at all (didn't really before either) I have tried the pressing the unlock button four times and it did not work; then the lock button four times and nothing.... what am I doing wrong

The battery may be installed backwards or the contacts may be corroded. If the remote has an LED on it, does the LED light up when you press the button? Also try pressing the button a few more times to see if it syncs up.

Some have the same issue with the 9-5. I think I had to start my car after replacing the battery for it to work but can't remember exactly what I did.
