Chain tensioner

Why is my chain tensioner almost at Max ? The Saab dealer did a complete new installation of the timing chain kit 25.000 miles ago . Please help .

How do you know it's at the max?
Did you get to see the engine apart? Maybe they just rolled in a new chain.

I took it out for inspection . There was also a small Leak . Leak came from tensioner . It was almost at Max . 25.000 Miles ago (2years) i bought a complete set , ready to install by my Saab dealer. The set/kit contained everything . Chain guides , gears , tensioners , o rings , timing chain , Balance chain ,....

I wouldn't worry that it's worn. When I did mine I noticed that the tensioner made that zip noise when I installed it the first time. I think it's normal.
It may be a tensioner design from another engine that was re-purposed. No sense reinventing something if you have one that works...
Don't bother taking the valve cover off to check for wear.... It wears down below ware you can't see from the top.
On my 04 that I rebuilt I thought the guides looked fine from the top. It turned out the back one was almost wore through down below... The bottom of the front one was broken too. (364 000 km...)

This is what my tensioner looks like after one day of driving. I've gone a whole 15 km.
I don't see a leak. Yet... I don't expect it to be a problem any more.
I just noticed why I can't get my big (??mm) socket through the hole to get at the tensioner.... The bolt that holds the serpentine belt tensioner pulley is in the way!

??? Thats how it supposed to look mine was leaking . First remove the pulley 13mm , then you can easely reach the timing chain tensioner . First 13mm bolt with spring inside , then the big 27mm tensioner . Mine is at 17mm !!!! So yess , i'm worried ! :'(

My bolt that holds the spring is 12mm.
17mm I think that's a bit long!
Ware/ how did you measure it from?
