You may just have a water leak. The fumes can get through the vent system and smell strange. Check that the coolant level is not going down.

My '86 SPG had a similar overheating problem. The fan motors had seized up. I took them apart and lubed the bearings. That solved the overheating problem. While I had everything apart, I took the time to flush out the intercooler, and splice in new wiring to the fans and various other accessories, not to mention installing new hoses. The cooling fans are crucial to maintaining proper engine temp.
