Exhaust Manifold / Cylinder Head Question

Today, I'm putting my cylinder head back together. Just wanted to confirm a question about the exhaust manifold studs. The exhaust manifold studs have a long end of threads and a short end of threads. It's the short end of the threads that go into the cylinder head, correct? I'm guessing you must use vice grips to tighten the studs into the head before installing the exhaust manifold gasket, then the manifold?

    Hi there!

The end with the short threads go into the head alright. I've been working on a '99 9-5 2.0T last couple of days, and the studs have different length. Did you mark who goes where?
I wouldn't use vice grip, cause you might mishap and ruin some threads very easily. Instead use two nuts (counter nuts) where they lock eachother up. Thighten the stud in the head, remove the nuts, mount the manifold, and put on the original nuts. I had the turbo mounted while the manifold where out so I had to remove all the studs in the turbo and put them back in after the manifold were fitted.

This is my 2 cents. Sorry for a little stuttering english.

Thanks for your help Tom. I know the long (4) studs go to the outside and the short ones go to the inside. I just wasn't sure that the short threaded end went into the head,
thank you for verifying that. I was familiar with the counter nut thing, but I thought that the nuts that came with my Scan Tech exhaust manifold stud / nut kit were the locking
type that end up cutting threads into the nut, so I was hesitant to use them to do the counter nut thing.
My original nuts and studs that came off the exhaust manifold are completely trashed, rusted up totally.
Great advice, thank you, I appreciate it.
