    Radio knob removal '03 9-5

The stereo's volume control knob on my 2003 9-5 arc (prestige audio) is rather well chewed up, and I'd like to replace it, or at least refurbish it (plastidip spray?)

I assumed it was a friction fit, and would simply pull off with enough outward "pull", but it does not want to release.
(If I pulled any harder, I think I'd damage the internal electronic control)

Does anyone know if there is another way to release it, or did some prior owner maybe GLUE it in place?

eEuroparts has new knobs for the 9-3 radio that looks similar, but nothing listed for 9-5
Could it be that this knob is compatible?

It is supposed to come off as all similar buttons, listed in the EPC for 9-5 Prestige as spare part P/N 5036066, and available e.g. at: http://www.thesaabsite.com/95/Saab-9...omponents.html

    Thanks!

When you say "come off as all similar", do you mean it should simply pull off?

Mine won't. Maybe it's been glued, for some unknown reason.

To the best of my knowledge (whatever that means) - yes. If you buy a new button you will be i position to verify my (lack of) knowledge, and to replace it if you have to cut the current button into pieces for removal - given it is glued.

The Bass, Treble & Fader knobs pull right off as expected, but the volume won't budge.

I ordered the knob from SaabSite (thru Amazon)
We'll see if there's some special "trick" to get it off.

Laary, did you figure out how to get the knobs of and more importantly, where to buy the replacement knobs.

Anyone, why are these knobs feeling like they are just melting up? They feeling they are dissolving.

I go the knobs off the radio. They are deep, which makes them difficult to get to. I use a plastic spoon and got in behind it and they popped right off.
With a little soap and hot water the sticky melting rubber comes off easy. I guess in worst case I have to reuse them as is if I can't find replacements that fit.

I did see you found knobs at Amazon, did not have such luck.

Hi acuboost. Thanks for your input!

I'm not sure if my copy/paste will show up correctly in the forum, but...

    95 1999–2005 Volume Button Pioneer/harman kardon 5036066 $7.27 Buy Now
    95 1999–2005 Bass/treble/fade Button Pioneer/harman kardon 5036074 $5.65 Buy Now

You may find them at TheSaabSite.com :
    http://www.thesaabsite.com/95/Saab-9...omponents.html

.. scroll down about 2/3 of the way to the section titled: "RADIO & RELATED 95 SAAB 1999–2014"

It's a bit cheaper going through amazon, as the price + shipping costs are reduced slightly
    Amazon.com: OES Saab 95 Bass/Treble/Fade Button 5036074: Toys & Games
Amazon.com: OES Saab 95 Volume Button 5036066: Automotive

These, of course are for the 9-5. You are looking for knobs for the 9-3?

    I bought one of each.
I thought the Bass/Treb/Fadr knobs MIGHT have come as a set of 3, but didn't.
    I haven't installed either yet.
It DOES appear that the volume knob (like the other small ones) is simply a "friction fit" that should come off with a bit of additional PULL.

The rubberized coating on these is not very durable, and mine got abused while I was working on my radio mod.
I thought "cleaning it up" with nail polish remover would help, but made matters worse.

I've been reluctant to FORCE the volume knob off, for fear of breaking the underlying control, rendering the whole radio useless.
(I CANNOT go without a radio in the car, and don't want the expense & risk of a replacement, and the divorce/re-marriage process)

So,... you got your volume knob off by prying it out with a spoon? Clever!

(Pulling it by hand seemed impossible to you, too ?)

Thanks, will check it. Yes, I would end up with parts of the knob in my hand, black sticky rubber. It's like a too strong cleaning solution was used.
