Plastic Headlight re-silvering "SOLVED"
Failed my MOT due to the headlights lacking power and any definition, got a quote from apparently the only people in the country (NZ) of approx $650 for the pair to be re-silvered professionaly + the cost of sending them down to the South Island! Ouch.
After much googling and forum browsing found some forum members who had tried a couple of different ways of solving this issue, bottom line these are NOT my ideas just the results I had when I tried them. So a massive thank you to those forum members who went before me.
1st I tried the "Chrome" spray paint, all I can say is make sure you keep your reciept as you will need it when you return for a refund, just turned out to be one step up from silver, not at all reflective.
Now the one that works, I had some very shiny silver metal tape used I think for lagging heating/cooling ducts etc. I found some new stuff, 50mm wide but quite a big roll at the plumbers supplies for about $50-$60, too dear for me so back to the old stuff, just very patiently lay shaped pieces into your headlight, takes ages, quite a bit of overlap and some gaps. Obviously its tape you can see it through the lens but it works, the lights way better, more defined and upto warrent of fitness standards. And what a saving, treated myself to a curry!
Hopefully this will help someone.Last edited by Brandonhere; 16 October 2014 at 18:49.

NZ$650? That's a rip off. I had mine done in the UK, professionally vacuum deposited to look like new. Cost £60, that's about NZ$120. i used these guys in the UK. The process is not rocket science. VMC Limited. Vacuum Metalising & Spray Painting Specialists

Wow that's a great price, I am definately bookmarking that site. Still taking into account the cost of postage to and from plus time off the road i'm still pretty pleased with my $0.00 result.
Thanks for sharing.
