saab 95 headlight failure - NOT orange relay

Hi.

I have a saab 95. It has a headlight failure notification.

I have
left low beam not working
right low beam working
left main beam working
right main beam not working
high beam both sides ok

I replaced the bulbs. But the old bulbs were fine

I searched the internet and discovered threads about orange box. I removed it. Re soldered as instructed. No difference.

So I bought a new orange unit.

Waited two weeks

Fitted new box and .... no difference. Exactly as the one I "fixed"

Checked the wiring under the fuse box and seems ok. Bashing with hammers does no good...

now need help.... Please !!!

Very weird option of the 9-5 headlight failures. Yet I haven't got an idea what is the culprit, and clarifications are needed to further twist my brain:
- The headlights are halogens?
- As I understand "high beam both sides ok" means both main beams are working when the springloaded "flash" function is selected.
- No modifications are implemented, i.e. the lights were working until the problem occured.
- The model year?

Can you clarify what you mean with low, main and high beam? There usually is only low and high beam.

When looking in the WIS, the model year is important; Kindly provide, if not inconvenient.

The (front) side lights, which I understand are the ones Saab calls parking lights, are not monitored with regard to the filaments, e.g. the "bong" is caused by the not working right low beam. I do not (yet) see a commonality between the two not working lights, so is it possible that the side light could have been out before the the warning was given?

I do assume you have checked the fuses in question pertaining to the two fuse boxes: Fuse #3 in the instrument panel fuse box (IP) for the left side light, and #13 in the engine compartment fuse box (UEC) for the right low beam?

The information given with regard to fuse designation pertains to MY2003, however applies for your 2004 as well. So far - so good

The 12V (+30) for both low beams (or "dipped beams" by Saab) is supplied via relay FR15 in the UEC to one pin, #5 (56B) of the filament monitor module ("orange relay"), consequently must power be present there. The power is split in the module and fed to outputs on pin #4 (56BL) / fuse #11 (UEC) and pin #2 (56BR) / fuse #13 for left - right low beams respectively. So 12V should be measured on both sides of fuse #13 when left low beam is light.

Power for right low beam is supplied from the fuse to pin #3 of the connector at the headlamp. Given 12V is not there, check continuity, close to 0 ohm, between the pin and the fuse when power is switched off.

LAIKATHEDOG - Just wondering if you got this sorted? My headlight bulbs were getting fried. Did the orange relay fix, but ultimately found the alternator was putting out 20volts. Voltage regulator fail, I suspect. Ordered an alternator and will put it in as soon as the temperature allows. Hope that fixes my issue.

I had something similar in my '98 SE. Found out to be the wiring in the headlight itself. Nudged it a couple of times. Fine after that till I sold the car a few months later.

I replaced the alternator and that solved the lights blowing, but my high beams (new lamps) don't work. 2001 Saab 9-5 SE.
