Timing Chain Or Belt?
I have a 2.3t 2002 9-5 ARC. Recently purchased. 135000km. The previous owner says it has a timing chain. All the research I've done indicates it should be a timing belt.
Is there an easy way to tell and what is the recommended interval to replace each.
I've looked through the paperwork and I see no indication of any replacement. I'm yet to scan the inside of the bonnet for a "Replace Belt in" sticker but after a quick look I don't thinke ones in there.
I don't want to be driving around in a ticking timebomb. But I also dont really have $1000 to just go throwing away if I dont need to.

You have an external drive belt and an internal chain.
so, relax. Your real issue is sludge and if you have checked that out you are good to go.

Thanks Mike. Previous owner has been using synthetic oil so hopefully I wont have the sludge issue. But I'll get it checked in June when the oil and filter are due to be done.
Is there a simple method of telling what cars are chain or belt?

Simple method: well, not really. You just have to goggle your model and engine type and research it. The Saab V 6 in the 9 5 has a belt that has to be changed every 60000 miles. An expensive deal.
