What does this do? This will be obvious to someone!
Hi everyone,
I have just collected a T16s notchback that has sat in a farmers field for almost 10 years and that needs some serious love.
The new project begins here. The wife is not happy.
A quick inspection and there is one item that I'm not familiar with, picture attached.
There are two hoses (assumed vacuum) that have been detached, although there appears to be three possible connections, two on top and another at the bottom facing backwards towards the bulk head.
Can anyone shed any light? Is this an EGR valve/switch?
It is on the near side wing inside the engine bay area.
I did manage to find one picture that shows the unit attached in some way (top of the picture, circled in purple). It appears to have three hoses attached, the two at the top using a specific connector.
Thanks everyone.Last edited by Classic; 07 July 2015 at 21:05. Reason: Additional photo.

It doesn't quite look like the valve in the parts diagram at the Jim Ellis SAAB website, but it looks like it is in the proper location. So, sorry I can't ID it for sure.In any case, the EGR on my car was removed during what was either a recall or a service campaign. When that was done, a new later model ECU was supposed to be installed, so if you still have the EGR valve, it may not have been done. In my view, having had the recall done is a desirable feature when you are looking for a SAAB of this vintage.

Don't recollect seeing that on any 900. Engine bay items look non-standard and modified, so don't rely on that item being original.

A quick update in case anyone else comes across this question.
My engine has the LH 2.2 Jetronic fuel injection system and is vacuum rather than electrical, hence this 'extra' part.
A long-in-the-tooth SAAB ex-technician tells me that the part in the photo is indeed related to the EGR system.
All I have to do now is work out which hose goes where...

I think its a solenoid for a water injection system.
From you picture I don't see an EGR system at all. My car does not have one, but its an 85 with a 2.2 motor.
