2002 9-3 HOT Hatch - Break In Questions & Loud Lifters when @ Operating Temp
Hello SW,
I just put my 02 9-3 on the road. The block has 53 miles on it. The block is bored over .25 with Wossner pistons, stock rods.
Couple of questions:
1. Some people say break in the engine hard, so you won't lose power, some say take it easy. What's the proven way to break these blocks in?
2. Lifters are LOUD after the car has been driven for 20+ minutes at idle. We have short belted it for now to bypass problematic idler pulley. I didn't have the lifters reconditioned during the rebuild process, which I regret now. Is there some kind of bodge/hack I can do to the lifters without removing them from the head?
EDIT This was caused by a defective timing chain tensioner. I was a few days from total failure. Shout out to my mechanic who performed emergency surgery in the field!
Also, any other advice is welcomed with open arms. I've never had to break in a block, and I'd like it to last for a while!
Thank you for your time,

Isolated the problem.
The person who rebuilt my motor neglected to replace the breather hose from the bottom of the oil trap to the top of the oil pan.
So much ugh!
That also explains why I have a P1110 code.
I report back in once I have the hose installed.
Since the nipple on the trap is next to the dipstick tube, I believe all I have to do is unbolt the top of the dipstick assembly, pull the tube up and out, slide on the breather hose, and rebolt the dipstick assembly and pop in dipstick.
EDIT I was able to get this on without taking anything off, was a bit slippery but I managed!
I wanted to share in case anyone else encounters this.
Thank god I put in oil everyday.
Thanks SW!Last edited by Kazamario; 06 October 2016 at 02:41. Reason: Edited post

Update:
My CEL mentioned in the OP was indeed the turbo bypass valve.
Replaced it and CEL stayed gone after clearing the code.Last edited by Kazamario; 06 October 2016 at 02:41. Reason: Edited post

Hi
Just wondering if you had checked the sump strainer mesh at all.
If yours is the B205R engine they have the problem of sludging up.
The return breather pipe to the sump breaks down and causes small balls of degraded rubber to block the strainer and starve the head of oil.
Here's some links to info you might find of use

Hope this is of some help

Dave, Nordwulf,
I really appreciate you guys responding.
@Dave - The engine was rebuilt, so no sump issues thank heavens!
