Scratched instrument panel Buttons

How can I renew the appearance of these waxy textured instrument pushbuttons? The A/C cluster is especially bad from pressing our fingernails into the surface. Is this stuff some mixture of beeswax and carbon black, or is there some acrylic or asphalt in the mix? This is a 2000 9-5, but I think these buttons may be on other models as well.

The buttons are not replaceable and not sure how you can renew their appearance. It is probably best to find a replacement ACC (Automatic Climate Control) unit on eBay or other sites. Shouldn't be too expensive and they are very easy to replace.
