OK. Charged the battery. Checked voltage. 12.0 V even. Alarm indicator light has been blinking the whole time it was charging. Started car, SID(?) has the "service theft alarm" and "check brake light" messages which is usual. There was also an ugly, not so great rotational noise letting me know things are not well with something. Check voltage again, it's now around 11 V. So, alternator isn't getting power to battery. I'm fairly certain that the alternator is what's making the fussy noise. While I'm waiting for good weather to address that I'll be getting rid of the alarm (hopefully) and doing other little projects on it while it's not running. Might as well, while it's down, right? I'm open to suggestions. Thanks again for all the helpful hints and links.

hope you will find a rebuilding alternator more cheaper than a new one. if doing this change the accessories belt of course and the O-ring of water pump (sad if you get an issue with these last ones No ?

I got a Bosch rebuilt alternator in June last year and still working great so far. Replacing it can be tricky but not impossible. Just need a bit of patience. More info here: http://saabworld.net/showthread.php?t=32636

Thanks for the information, gentlemen. I guess I get to learn how to do an alternator :-). Fortunately (?) I have a parts car that had ran out of oil. It's a 99 Saab Aero Wagon that I bought for $250. So, I know that the engine is shot but I'm hoping to recoup the $250 with just the alternator. Hopefully, pulling the one on the parts car will make pulling the one on the driver a little more informed but, somehow I doubt it. I've already pulled as many relays and switches from it that I can think of. Anyway....I'll repost when I get it semi-sorted.

I wish I had pills....Not really nervous, just don't 'enjoy' working on the cars as much as I used to. It's definitely more fun to do the work when you 'want' to rather than when you 'have' to.... :-)

i've saying that in relation with the link of nordwulf some extracts Originally Posted by Mike Brennan

I think I got it out on the 28th try so it must have been my lucky day!
It actually wasn't that bad to get it out from the top. Just had to wiggle it a bit and make sure to push up the engine from the bottom. I think it was intimidated by a few words I said that I can't repeat here..
The job took me about 6 hours but I had to take frequent breaks because (the genius that I am) I did this on the hottest day of the year with the sun cooking the engine bay and my back getting fried in the afternoon sun. Should have waited until 5:00pm... I think I could do it again in about 2-3 hours in a comfortable garage.
Wish you good luck BryanLast edited by swisssaabist; 14 February 2017 at 09:40.

Ha! Yes, I read that comment. I think I should be able to get it out in less than 100 attempts. Of course, I'll practice on the parts car and I'll have it tested before I put it in the driver. I really don't want to do that job 3X. I really wish my garage was available. Looks like I'll be doing it in the great out of doors. :-)
Thanks for the links!

and last advice have a look for your engine mountings like that you have a good idea if they needed to be changed. a good hint is the engine moving back and forth when push or release the pedal in a quick way.
