Digger-I have TPMS. Just purchased car and constant msg: Tire pressure system failure. Contact Saab dealer. I recognize I could fix the system - probably with a set of new pressure sensors - however rather not have. My owners manual states "The message shown above is NOT displayed if none of the wheels have sensors, such as if winter wheels without sensors are fitted." Seems straight forward, however mechanic told me I cannot shut off the TPMS system. It's federal law. However, I believe he was thinking of 2008 model year and forward. If I pop the sensors off, I should be all set, no?

Here's the kicker, these sensors don't just pop off without re-balancing the tire and most DIY people don't have those tools to do this at home. Sure your car is pre federal requirement and a tire shop can do it, but will they? You might get it done when you put new tires on the old car, but the feds do send people out to test shops on federal emissions and safety compliance, so not to many people want to risk a hefty fine and/or jail time when its so much safer to say no to everybody..

Simple answer, buy a set of wheels and get tyres fitted to them, the fitter won't know what car they are for so won't argue if you say the car doesn't have TPMS.

Changed mind. Only one wheel with faulty TPMS. Will replace and keep TPMS system.
