    2007 Saab 9-5 Aero Sedan

    New member rear rubbing issues

I have a 2007 9-5 Aero sedan and I'm having tire rubbing issues on the rear end. I upgraded the shocks and struts to Koni SAS, put on the Eibach lowering springs and 234/40/18 tires on 18x8 inch rims with a 45mm offset.

Since then, I have been getting some rub in the rear end going over some bumps. The factory wheels were 17x7.5's with a 49mm offset. I ordered 15mm spacers to bring the wheels out more and the problem just got worse.

    Any help will be appreciated.

The Dame Edna (2006 and later) 9-5 Aero has very little clearance between the tyre and wheel arch at the back even with the standard 235/45 17 tyres. By fitting wheels with a different offset you have effectively reduced this to almost nothing on a flat road and less than nothing over bumps. Page 225 of your hand book carries the following warning.
"Wheels larger than 17” must not be fitted.
The maximum permissible offset is 49 mm."

Whilst the wheel and tyre combination you have chosen is the same width as the original the position within the wheel arch has changed so it is probably rubbing on the inside edge of the tyre without the spacer and on the outside edge with it. I would guess that a 4mm spacer would reposition the tyre to the correct place within the wheel arch.

Nice Car DeanoK, but you need work on your thread titles. That sounded like TMI... Just a little levity during these crazy times!
