DIY - fixing of LED light bar

    Hello everyone,

I'm posting some photos from my work of fixing trunk bar LEDs.
If you would ask some questions then you are welcome.
Note: the hand written diagram is also showing a connector cables. I don't remember how many pins this had, but there are two rows of pins. In one row are two cables going to trunk locker and in the second row are three cables in series - one (in middle of connector) black is for registration plate lamps and is positive +12V; next one red is positive +12V for LEDs; black on the edge of connector is negative or 0V.
    Best regards

    Radek

Well done, could you list the hardware needed for, we are there mainly rookies in electronics mounting it can be really helpful.
    Thanks

    Sure, here you are.
I used these for bar fixing:
    1. Soldering iron - for opening the LEDs chambers and for soldering of led diodes to wires. For opening you can also use Dremel Mini Rotary for example,
    2. 8 x LED WW-RUA30TS-H bought from TME,
    3. 2 x resistors 360 Ohms 0.25W,
    4. Household intercom 4 wires cable in my example I used Bitner model YTDY 4X0.5,
    5. Some repair tape, electrical tape, glue gun,
    6. 1 x strong and long (40-50cm) Nylon Strip Cable Fastener Zip Tie - as a pilot for pulling cables into their place.
    And that is.

At this moment I have 470 Ohms resistors (as it is on photos) connected to LEDs, but will replace with 360 Ohms as it is on the diagram - to have them lighting brighter a bit.
With 470 Ohms the voltage measured on each LED is ~2.2V. This type diodes working from 1.8V to 2.6V. Maximum measured Voltage from car was 14.85V so it should work with 360 Ohms and voltage should be around 2.4V. Then the diodes should be a little bit brighter. I hope.
Another way is to find brighter diodes than 600mcd, for example: LTST-B680VEKT (710-1400mcd) - resistors ~300 Ohms min. 120mW; or OSR53014C1A-30MA (800-1000mcd) - resistors ~200 Ohms min. 180mW. Always, the best is to experiment with a little higher resistance and then do a voltage measurement on diodes.

P.S. I have trash old broken diodes out together with their plastic frames and also trash out the electronic stabilizer module board, because I have observed that light intensity doesn't change with running or stopping engine and resistors do their job very well.
Diodes are really cheap and I have actually knowledge how to disassemble and repair it again in a case of burning diodes out for some time. If it will happens then I replace diodes for stronger at that time

I have one led bar where the circuit board has been also replaced with resistors and leds and it didn't work well. The led bar worked but as I have towing bar in my car the car began to give on colder days errors that I have trailer lights not working altough I didn't have any trailer connected. Also as the car thought I tow a trailer the parking sensors was disabled while the error was on. Also the turning indicator flashed double speed. I don't know what is the resistors values in my led bar though. I recommend the available repairkit instead of replacing the drive board with resistors.

    Hello tturku,

I think, that your problems are probably about incorrect wiring of the tow hook or something else. The electric circuit of the LED bar is separated. The same applies to direction indicators - they are on a separate circuit I do not know who repaired/mounted the electricity circuits in your car for LED bar and tow hook, but you have something mixed up there and your problems may be due to this fact, not the resistors used...because one has nothing to do with the other.
As for the repair kit, it costs $150 without shipping, and the cost of making a prototype board voltage stabilizer plus diodes on the PCB is $15. The cost of two resistors and eight LEDs is $3.

To build a voltage stabilizer - the easiest way is to use this guide from the link below or any other. You can search the internet.
    http://www.instructables.com/id/5v-Regulator/
Or find one in which the output voltage can be adjusted using a potentiometer, then you can use a diode with a lower voltage.
You can use such a proto pcb with the almost same size as the original one.

Even if use the repair kit, you have to do the same thing, open the case by cutting, cut the cables, prepare the soldering cables again, solder everything and finally glue the housing. Labor consumption is the same.
I do not want to discuss what's better. I showed you how to do it yourself for 2-3 dollars.
The decision belongs to our colleagues.
Have you purchased this repair kit because it does not follow your response? Where does the recommendation come from?

    Regards

Hi, the fixed towbar was instaled by first owner so I don't know about it's wiring. The repairkit is about 100€ and fixed the problem with towbar issues. Also the original ledbar I had no problems with towbar and have towed also several times with the car and all working. For sure diy with your components bought separately is cheaper than the repairkit but it comes with new design driveboard also. This is the kit I used. http://www.hblom.se/saab-9-5-2010-20...epair-kit.html

Unfortunately, we have such electricians. It's best to fix it yourself. The most important thing is that you are satisfied with the choice and everything works for you.

On my 2000 saab 9-5, The overhead brake light is an LED strip. This has an active transistor circuit in parallel with the LED load. This circuit simulates the behavior of an incandescent bulb in the voltage range where the LEDs do not conduct. I believe this is where your homemade light is causing error display. I will reverse engineer the circuit and post it. Someday.

The simplest way to achieve a stable voltage would be one, or more, LM317 voltage regulators to power the groups of LEDs. The LM317 being a variable regulator the brightness of each group can be adjusted to match the tail lights using a potentiometer. Not sure that this will work with the pre-2010 high level brake light as the circuit there is trying to emulate an incandescent lamp.

For those who have difficulty reading the circuit diagram on its side:
