Crackling noise (speakers) when turning the key on

I have just encountered a strange crackling noise that appears to be coming from the radio speakers when I turn the key on anytime the car has been sitting for more than 1/2 hour. This occurs with the radio on or off. About 18 months ago, I had to have some electrical repairs done under the key area and have the keys replaced but we have been very careful to keep the key area dry since. At that time, we experienced a situation where the steering wouldn't unlock, no crank and of course, no go.
The current crackling noise is quite loud but because it occurs with the radio on or off, I'm wondering if there is possibly a bad ground or poor connection that is causing back-feeding through the speakers on initial key on. once the car is started, there are no other issues and the noise only happens as the key is moving to the "on" position.
Has anyone seen a similar issue? any solutions or suggestions are appreciated.
    Thanks

Radio on or off, the #1 amp provides sound for the turn signal when the key is turned to on. From the way you describe keeping the key area dry, I suspect that something got spilled at some time in the past. With amp 1 located under the drivers seat the connections for that would be the first best place to check. Do be careful when looking at this, it is part of the fiber optic network and don't over bend those cables.

Thanks Digger. That's sounds logical - I hadn't considered the signal sounds as being through the audio system. We had repairs done in that area before due to spills and I know wet electrical issues seldom just go away.
